नाना मृगगणाकीर्णं नित्यं समुदितांडजम्
The area is always filled with many groups of animals and lively birds.
कपालपाणिर्भगवांस्तथारूपं वनोत्तमम्
The Blessed One, holding a skull in his hand, appeared in that excellent forest.
ता वृक्षपंक्तयः सर्वा दृष्ट्वा रुद्रं समागतम्
All those rows of trees, seeing Rudra arrive,
पुष्पप्रतिग्रहं कृत्वा पादपानां महेश्वरः
Maheshvara accepted the flowers offered by the trees.
एवमुक्ते भगवता तरवो निरवग्रहाः 5.1.5.
When the Blessed One spoke thus, the trees became free from restraint.
वरं ददासि देवेश प्रसन्न जनवत्सल
O Lord of the gods, you grant boons, gracious and loving to your devotees.
एष नः परमः कामो देवदेव नमोऽस्तु ते
This is our highest desire; O God of gods, salutations to you.
सर्वात्मना प्रपन्ना वै याचामहे वरोत्तमम्
We have surrendered with all our being and request the supreme boon.
इत्युक्तः पादपैः सर्वैः शरणागतवत्सलः
Thus addressed by all the trees, he who cherishes those who seek refuge,
वरं ददामि भूयो वो न वृथा दर्शनं मम
I grant you a boon again; my appearance will not be in vain.
नाग्निर्न वायुर्न जलं न सूर्यकिरणातपः
Neither fire, nor wind, nor water, nor the heat of the sun's rays,
नित्यं पुष्पवरोपेता नित्यं सुस्थिरयौवनाः
You will always be adorned with flowers, always steadfast in youthful vigor.
कामसंदर्शनाः पुंसां तपःसंध्याज्वलदृशाम्
For men whose eyes are inflamed by the fire of ascetic practice, the sight of desire arises.
एवं स वरदः शंभुरनुजग्राह पादपान्
Thus, the gracious Śambhu supported the trees.
क्षितिं निपतता तेन कंपते स्म रसातलम् 5.1.5.
As he fell to the earth, the underworld trembled.
शक्राशनिहतानीव व्याघ्रव्यालान्वितानि च
Like those struck down by Indra’s thunderbolt, and accompanied by tigers and wild beasts.
देवसिद्धविमानानि गंधर्वनगराणि च
The aerial chariots of the gods and siddhas, and the cities of the gandharvas,
कपोतमेषाश्चात्यंतं पुनः संघातदर्शनाः
Pigeons and sheep, in great numbers, appeared together again.
महता तस्य शब्देन जडांधबधिरं कृतम्
By the great sound he made, all were rendered dull, blind, and deaf.
सुरासुराणां सर्वेषां शरीराणि मनांसि च
The bodies and minds of all the gods and asuras
धैर्यमालंब्य सर्वेऽपि समागम्येंद्रपूर्वकाः
All of them, led by Indra, gathered together, relying on courage.
किं निमित्तं तु भगवन्नेतदुत्पातदर्शने
O Lord, for what reason has this portent appeared?
जातं कल्पावसानं च भिन्नमर्यादसागरम्
Has the end of the age arrived, with the ocean of boundaries broken?
धरा समाधृता कस्मात्सप्तसागरवारिणा
Why is the earth supported by the water of the seven seas?
यादृशोऽयं श्रुतः शब्दो न भूतो नापि विश्रुतः 5.1.5.
Such a sound as this, heard now, has never existed nor been known.
एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीद्ब्रह्मा परमेशानुभावितः
Thus addressed, Brahmā, empowered by the Supreme Lord, spoke.
यत्पृष्टं मरुतः सर्वे शृणुध्वं तत्र कारणम्
That which you have all asked, O Maruts, listen now to its cause.
मुखं छित्त्वा नखाग्रेण मद्देहात्पंचमं शिरः
Cutting off the fifth head from my body with the tip of his nail,
ययाचे पात्रमादाय भिक्षां नारायणं प्रभुम्
He took a bowl and begged for alms from the Lord Nārāyaṇa.
ततः कुशस्थलीमेत्य भगवांस्तद्वनोत्तमम्
Then the Blessed One went to Kuśasthalī, that excellent forest.
