By what you have spoken, this wonder has arisen in my mind.
Tell me in detail about this most marvelous greatness.
Listen, O best of Brahmins, to the most wondrous greatness of the confluence.
Ten billion thousand and ten billion hundred beings always dwell there, O Brahmin, as I have learned from Skanda.
Of the gods, the immortals, the perfected ones, and also the yogis.
A man who bathes there in the waters of the confluence with a focused mind—
Having performed a sacrifice with a Vaiṣṇava mantra in purity, whatever fruit he obtains—
Is equal to a thousand horse sacrifices and a hundred Vājapeya rites.
And the merit gained by giving gold daily is also obtained there.
On the new moon, the full moon, and on both twelfth days—
Whoever stands for a thousand ages even on one foot—
And whoever hangs down with head inverted for ten thousand ages—
The result attained by men here is not gained even by a hundred sacrifices.
Especially in the month of Pauṣa, bathing yields abundant rewards.
Especially in the month of Pauṣa, whoever bathes with devotion goes to the abode of Brahman, free from return.
And in the month of Pauṣa, whoever gives a lamp filled with ghee, the best—
Whatever sin, little or great, accumulated over many births—
Long life, health, prosperity, offspring, and supreme happiness—
He who, with discipline and devotion, observes a vow on the thirteenth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Pauṣa,
and keeps vigil through the night, offering lamps everywhere,
being a devotee of Viṣṇu, worships Viṣṇu and listens to the tales of Hari, spending the night awake with stories imbued with merit,
then, at dawn, after bathing in pure water according to the prescribed rites and with reverence,
whoever gives gold, food, and garments, endowed with faith,
should perform this vigil every year, those who are devoted to merit,
Hari should be worshipped, and the twice-born should be properly satisfied by people according to their ability; serpents become harmless, just as they do at the sight of Tārkṣya.
One who bathes there ascends to heaven; one who bathes here becomes happy.
Whatever living beings exist in the three worlds, all of them,
among all beings here whose minds are afflicted by suffering,
seven inferior and seven superior ones, along with the person himself,
here, those who are congenitally blind are equal, as are those who are lame,
