He is the lord of the three worlds; how could he possibly depart from that?
He spoke sweet words: 'What you have said is true.'
Therefore, choose a boon, auspicious one, whatever you desire from me.
Therefore, grant me one day for play with him.
On the thirteenth day of the bright half of Caitra, O queen of the gods, the day and night both.
Therefore, that pool on earth is known as Śiva-Gaṅgā.
Then, embracing her again and again, he let her go.
When Gaṅgā departed, she modestly lowered her face.
Thus, O king, this is what happened there in ancient times at that pool.
In the bright half of the month of Caitra, one should bathe there.
Whatever inauspiciousness is done there is completely destroyed; by the number of hairs on his body, a man surely dwells in heaven.
The great lord, unchanging in form, established the liṅga.
Why was that liṅga cast down by the great-souled Vālakhilyas?
Tell me all this wonder as it truly happened.
Here I shall recount to you another ancient tale.
When Satī, steadfast in truth, met her end,
Then Kāmadeva, taking his flower-bow, swiftly approached him.
Seeing him rushing in, Tripurāntaka vanished out of fear.
He reached the hermitage of the Vālakhilyas, sacred and adorned with noble trees.
Clad in the directions, speaking sweetly, those women, deluded by desire, constantly said, 'O king, enjoy with us.'
Some embraced him, while others kissed him.
But the blessed Śambhu, the supreme lord, was without desire.
And that blessed Śambhu walked ahead of them.
Then, seeing the strange behavior arising from the wives, the sages,
Greatly distressed for the sake of their wives, they pronounced a curse, O scorcher of foes.
You mock us with our wives, and from your constant presence, this occurs.
By the words of Brahmā, O royal sage, the earth trembled then.
Then all the hosts of gods, terrified by fear, O king,
Went to the Grandfather and reported everything to him.
O lord, we do not know, O best of gods, the cause of this.
