ततस्तं लोलुपं दृष्ट्वा सा देवी कोपसंयुता 7.3.36.
Then, seeing him greedy, the goddess became filled with anger.
अब्रवीत्परुषं वाक्यं गच्छगच्छेति चासकृत्
She spoke harsh words, repeatedly saying, 'Go, go!'
अथाऽसौ सचिवैः सार्द्धं समंतात्पर्यवेष्टयत्
Then, together with his ministers, he surrounded her on all sides.
ततो जहास सा देवी सशब्दं परमेश्वरी
Then the goddess, the supreme lady, laughed aloud.
सुसन्नद्धाः सशस्त्राश्च रोषेण महताऽन्विताः
They were well-armored and armed, possessed of great wrath.
ततस्ते सहिताः सर्वे महिषं समुपाद्रवन्
Then, all together, they rushed at the buffalo.
ततः समभवद्युद्धं गणानां दानवैः सह
Then a battle arose between the hosts and the demons.
अथाऽसौ महिषो रुष्टः सचिवैर्विंनिपातितैः
Then the buffalo, enraged, struck down by his ministers, became furious.
रथप्रवरमारुह्य सारथिं समभाषत
Mounting the excellent chariot, he addressed the charioteer.
हत्वैनामद्य यास्यामि पारं रोषस्य दुस्तरम्
Having slain her, today I shall cross the difficult shore of wrath.
रथं तेनैव मार्गेण यत्र सा तिष्ठते ध्रुवम् 7.3.36.
Drive the chariot along the same path where she surely stands.
बहवस्तेन मार्गेण येनासौ प्रस्थितो नृप
Many have gone along that path by which she departed, O king.
पपात महती चोल्का निहत्य रविमंडलम्
A great meteor fell, striking the orb of the sun.
उपविष्टास्तथा वांता बहुमूत्रं प्रसुस्रुवुः
Seated thus, terrified, they discharged much urine.
स तान्सर्वाननादृत्य महोत्पातान्सुदारुणान्
He disregarded all those terrible and dire omens.
विमुंचंश्च शरान्नादांस्तिष्ठतिष्ठेति च ब्रुवन्
Releasing arrows and roaring, he shouted, 'Stop, stop!'
महिषं रोषसंयुक्तं यो वारयति संगरे
Whoever restrains the wrathful buffalo in battle—
ततो देवी समासाद्य प्रोक्ता गर्वेण पार्थिव
Then, approaching the goddess, he spoke to her with pride, O king.
न च बालिशि मे वीर्यं न सौभाग्यं न वा धनम्
Neither my strength, nor my fortune, nor my wealth is childish.
नूनं तत्त्वेन जानामि अवलिप्तासि भामिनि
Surely, I know the truth: you are arrogant, O beautiful one.
स्त्रियं त्वां नोत्सहे हंतुं पौरुषे च व्यवस्थितः 7.3.36.
I do not have the heart to kill you, a woman, though I am resolved in manliness.
त्रैलोक्ये नास्ति मत्तुल्यः पुमान्कश्चिच्च बालिशि
In the three worlds, there is no man equal to me, O childish one.
प्रगृह्य सशरं चापं वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह
Grasping his bow with arrows, he spoke these words.
कुमार्याः कामयुक्तेन तथापि शृणु मे वचः
Though filled with desire for the maiden, still, hear my words.
पितामह वरं देवा मन्यंते दानवाधम
The grandsire, the gods, consider the lowest of demons worthy.
मुक्त्वैकां कामिनीं पाप त्वं कृतः पद्मयोनिना
Having released a single beloved woman, you, O sinner, were created by the lotus-born.
पितामहवरः सोऽत्र जयशीलोऽसि दानव
Here you have received the boon of the Grandsire, and you are victorious in battle, O Dānava.
एषा त्वामिषुभिस्तीक्ष्णैर्नयामि यमसादनम्
But now, with these sharp arrows, I will send you to the abode of Yama.
चतुर्भिश्चतुरो वाहाननयद्यमसादनम्
With four arrows, she brought down his four steeds to the realm of Yama.
ध्वजं चिच्छेद चैकेन ततोऽन्येन हृदि क्षतः
With one arrow she cut down his banner, and with another she wounded his heart.
