Then, on the order of the king of the buffaloes, a messenger went to Mount Arbuda.
He reported this to the buffalo king with amazement.
That maiden, born from divine radiance, is still today of surpassing beauty.
In this way, all the ascetics present there were questioned.
Her form, youth, and splendor cannot be described.
He sent a wise demon as a messenger.
O wise one, go quickly and, for my sake, approach that ascetic woman.
Then that wise one went swiftly, bowed down, and with humility spoke these words to her.
There is one named Mahiṣa, renowned and powerful, lord of the three worlds.
He desires you, O auspicious one, as his lawful wife, according to righteousness.
If he should be pleasing to you, and you likewise dear to him—
Thus addressed by him, the goddess spoke these words.
A messenger is always declared inviolable everywhere.
Go and tell that wicked, lowly demon Mahiṣa—
All this effort has been made by me for your destruction.
Overwhelmed by great fear, astonished by her beauty, and entirely struck by her words,
Hearing this, O King, Mahiṣa was tormented by the arrows of desire.
Assemble an invincible army on Mount Arbuda.
Then he arranged a fourfold army, well-equipped.
Then elephants, fully armored and mounted by warriors, were seen.
The horses, spotless and swift as the wind, possessed great radiance.
Chariots were fashioned to resemble flying palaces.
The foot soldiers were massive in form, mighty archers, and possessed immense strength.
There was one hundred thousand elephants, and three times as many chariots.
Then, having reached a multitude, he encircled it from afar.
Seeing the goddess absorbed in meditation, he was afflicted by the arrows of desire.
Hearing of your beauty, O lovely-faced one, I have come.
I have sixty thousand wives, O pure-smiling one.
Your austerity is unworthy, child; enjoy pleasures as you desire.
Even though addressed thus by him, she did not reply.
