ये च त्वां पूजयिष्यंति मानवा मोह संयुताः
Those men who worship you, filled with delusion,
केतक्या च तथा प्रोक्तं यस्मात्तस्मात्सुदुष्टया 7.3.34.
And likewise, because Ketakī has spoken, therefore, by that most wicked one,
एवं शापो तयोर्दत्त्वा देवः प्रोवाच केशवम्
Having thus pronounced a curse upon them both, the god spoke to Keśava.
सत्यसंभाषणादेव वरं वरय सुव्रत
Because of truthful speech alone, choose a boon, O steadfast one.
न चापुण्यवतां देव त्वं तुष्टिमधिगच्छसि
O god, you do not attain satisfaction from those who are impure.
लिंगमेतदनंताख्यं लघुतां नय मा चिरम्
Bring this liṅga, called Ananta, to a lighter form without delay.
अब्रवीत्केशवं भूयः शृणु वाक्यमिदं हरे
He again spoke to Keśava: 'Hear this word, O Hari.'
एतन्मेध्यतमे देशे लिंगं स्थापय मे हरे
In this most pure place, establish the liṅga for me, O Hari.
मम तेजोविनिर्दग्धः कृष्णत्वं हि यतो गतः
Burned by my radiance, he became dark in color.
कृष्णकृष्णेति ते नाम प्रातरुत्थाय मानवः
Therefore, O man, upon rising in the morning, utter 'Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa' as his name.
वासुदेवोऽपि तल्लिंगं गृहीत्वाऽर्बुदपर्वते
Even Vāsudeva, taking that liṅga, was on Arbuda mountain.
कृष्णतीर्थं ततो जातं नाम्ना हि धरणीतले 7.3.34.
From that, the sacred place called Kṛṣṇa-tīrtha arose on the earth.
स्नात्वा कृष्णह्रदे पुण्ये तल्लिंगं पश्यते तु यः
Whoever bathes in the holy Kṛṣṇa lake and beholds that liṅga—
तथा च सर्वदानानां निष्कामः प्राप्नुयात्फलम्
He attains, without desire, the fruit of all gifts.
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन स्नानं तत्र समाचरेत्
Therefore, one should make every effort to bathe there.
एकादश्यां महाराज निराहारो जितेन्द्रियः
On the eleventh day, O great king, fasting and with senses controlled—
प्रभाते कुरुते श्राद्धं यस्तु श्रद्धासमन्वितः
He who, with faith, performs śrāddha in the morning—
तिलान्कृष्णान्नरस्तत्र ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददाति यः
He who gives black sesame there to the brāhmaṇas—
दर्शनादेव राजेन्द्र कृष्णतीर्थस्य मानवः
O king, merely by seeing Kṛṣṇa-tīrtha, a man—
मामुह्रदमिति ख्यातं तस्मिन्पर्वतरोधसि
On the slope of that mountain, it is known as Māmu-hrada.
तत्र स्नातो नरः सम्यक्छ्रद्धावान्सुसमाहितः
There, a man who bathes properly, with faith and full concentration—
तस्य पश्चिमदिग्भागे लिंगमस्ति महीपते
On its western side, O king, there is a liṅga.
स्नात्वा मामुह्रदे पुण्ये यस्तल्लिंगं च पश्यति स प्राप्नोति परं श्रेयः सर्वतीर्थेषु दुर्लभम्
Having bathed in the holy Māmu-hrada and seen that liṅga, he attains the supreme good, rare even among all sacred places.
यस्तत्र कुरुते श्राद्धं दक्षिणां मूर्तिमाश्रितः
He who performs śrāddha there, giving gifts, having taken refuge in the image—
तत्र दानं प्रशंसंति नीवाराणां महर्षयः
The great sages praise the giving of nīvāra grains there.
मुद्गलस्याश्रमं ब्रूहि मम सर्वं विधानतः
Tell me in detail, according to rule, about Mudgala's hermitage.
पुलस्त्य उवाच तत्रस्थस्य पुरा राजन्मुद्गलस्य महात्मनः
Pulastya said: Once, O King, the great-souled Mudgala was present there.
सोऽब्रवीद्देवराज्ञाहं प्रेषितो मुनिसत्तम
He spoke, 'I have been sent by the king of the gods, O best of sages.'
तान्मे वद करिष्येऽहं श्रुत्वा वै यत्क्षमं भवेत्॥ 7.3.35.
Tell me what you wish; having heard, I shall do whatever is proper.
ब्रूहि तान्सकलान्दूत त्वागमिष्याम्यहं ततः
Go and tell them all; I will come there afterwards.
