शान्ताय शान्तकल्लोलकैवल्यपददायिने
To the peaceful one, giver of the tranquil, wave-less state of liberation—
इन्दीवरदलश्यामं स्फूर्जत्किंजल्कविभ्रमम्
Dark as the petal of a blue lotus, with shimmering filaments in motion—
ववर्ष दृष्टिसुधया सर्वान्देवान्कृपान्वितः
He showered all the gods with nectar from his gaze, full of compassion.
दैतेयैर्विक्रमाक्रान्तं पदं समरदर्पितैः
The place seized by the valor of the daityas, intoxicated by battle—
सबलैर्बलहीनानां प्रतापो विजितः परैः 2.8.6.
The vigor of those with strength has subdued the weak, and has been overcome by others.
अयोध्यानगरे गत्वा करिष्ये तप उत्तमम्
I will go to the city of Ayodhya and undertake the highest austerity.
भवन्तोऽपि तपस्तीव्रं कुर्वंत्वमलमानसाः
You all, too, should perform intense austerities with pure minds.
अगस्त्य उवाच इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे देवान्देवो गरुडवाहनः
Agastya said: Having spoken thus, the god who rides Garuda vanished from the sight of the gods.
गुप्तो भूत्वा यदा विद्वन्सुरतेजोभिवृद्धये
When he became concealed, O wise one, for the increase of divine power among the gods—
आगतस्य हरेः पूर्वं यत्र हस्ततलाच्च्युतम्
Where, before the arrival of Hari, something had fallen from the palm of his hand—
तयोर्दर्शनमात्रेण सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
By merely seeing those two, one is freed from all sins.
जित्वा दैत्यान्रणैः सर्वान्संप्राप्य स्वपदान्यथ
Having conquered all the demons in battle, he then attained his own abode.
ततः सर्वे समेत्याशु बृहस्पतिपुरस्सराः हरिं द्रष्टुमथागच्छन्नयोध्यायां समुत्सुकाः
Then, all of them quickly assembled, led by Brihaspati, eager to see Hari, and came to Ayodhya.
आगत्य च ततः श्रुत्वा नानाविधगुणादरम् हरिमेकाग्रमनसा ध्यायन्तो ध्याननिष्ठिताः
Having arrived and heard of his various virtues and reverence, they fixed their minds solely on Hari, established in meditation.
तानागतान्समालोक्य पदभक्त्या कृतानतीन् 2.8.6.
Seeing those who had come, bowed with devotion at his feet—
अधुना भवतामिच्छां कां करोमि सुरा अहम्
Now, O gods, I will fulfill whichever wish you desire.
देवा ऊचुः भगवन्देवदेवेश त्वया संप्रति सर्वशः
The gods said: O Lord, God of gods, you have now accomplished everything for us.
तथापि सर्वदा भाव्यं नित्यं देव त्वया विभो
Yet, O Lord, you must always be present, forever, O mighty one.
एवमेव सदा कार्यं शत्रुपक्षविनाशनम्
In this way, the destruction of the enemy's faction must always be carried out.
श्रीमतां तेजसो वृद्धिं करिष्यामि सदासुराः
O gods, I will always bring about the increase of splendor for the illustrious.
अयं नाम्ना गुप्तहरिर्देवो भुवनविश्रुतः
This god, known as Guptahari, is renowned throughout the worlds.
अत्र यः प्राणिनां श्रेष्ठः पूजायज्ञजपादिकम्
Here, whoever among living beings is foremost in worship, sacrifice, recitation, and the like—
अत्र यः कुरुते दानं यथाशक्त्या जितेन्द्रियः
Here, whoever gives charity according to their ability, having mastered their senses,
अत्र मत्प्रीतये देवाः प्राणिभिर्धर्मकांक्षिभिः
Here, for my satisfaction, the gods are worshipped by beings who desire righteousness.
स्वर्णशृंगी रौप्यखुरी वस्त्रद्वयसमावृता 2.8.6.
A cow with golden horns, silver hooves, covered with two garments,
रत्नपुच्छा दुग्धवती घंटाभरणभूषिता
With a jeweled tail, yielding milk, adorned with bell ornaments,
द्विजाय वेदविज्ञाय गुणिने निर्मलात्मने
Should be given to a twice-born who knows the Vedas, who possesses virtue, and whose soul is pure.
ब्राह्मणाय च गौर्देया सर्वत्रसुखमश्नुते
And a cow should be given to a brāhmaṇa; one thereby enjoys happiness everywhere.
मत्प्रीतयेऽत्र दातव्या निर्मलेनांतरात्मना
For my satisfaction, it should be given here with an inner self that is pure.
स्नातं यैश्च विशुद्ध्यर्थमत्र मद्भक्तितत्परैः
And those who, purified by bathing, here with devotion to me,
