अग्निशौचानि वस्त्राणि तथा देवमयानि च
Garments purified by fire, as well as those made for the gods—
तत्सर्वं दर्शयित्वाथ कुशाय सुमहात्मने ॥ कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणं पश्चात्प्रणाममकरोद्द्विजाः
After showing all these to Kuśa, the great-souled one, the Brāhmaṇas circumambulated him and then offered their salutations.
एष पार्थिवशार्दूल राक्षसेन्द्रो विभीषणः
This is Vibhīṣaṇa, king of the demons, O tiger among kings.
प्रसादात्ते पितुः क्षेमं मम राज्ये मही पते
By your father's favor, I have safety in my kingdom, O lord of the earth.
मम राजन्नविज्ञातैर्यदि तैः सुदुरात्मभिः
O king, if those wicked ones, unknown to me—
एते ये राक्षसाः शप्तास्तवार्थाय मया प्रभो
These demons who are cursed, O Lord, are for your purpose by me.
पूरयंतु प्रयत्नेन पांसुभिः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥ ६.१०४.
Let them diligently fill the ground in all directions with earth.
ततस्तु भोजनं तेषां यद्भविष्यति भूतले
Then, whatever food is available for them on the earth,
तुलागते सदादित्ये तैरागत्य धरातले
When the sun always enters Libra, they come to the earth,
तत्र यैर्न कृतं श्राद्धं प्रेतपक्षे नराधमैः
There, for those lowest of men who have not performed the śrāddha during the fortnight of the ancestors,
ज्वररूपैस्तदंगस्थैर्भक्ष्यमन्नं पृथग्विधम्
Food of various kinds, in the form of fever and afflictions, remains attached to their bodies.
विधिहीनं च यैर्दत्तं भुक्तं च विधिवर्जितम्
And whatever is given without proper rite, or consumed contrary to rule,
एवं वाच्यास्त्वया सर्वे प्रेतास्ते मद्वचोऽखिलम्
Thus, you must tell all those departed ones my entire message.
तथा दूत त्वया वाच्यो मम वाक्याद्विभीषणः
Likewise, O messenger, you must speak these words of mine to Vibhīṣaṇa.
जानाम्यहं महाभाग न तेऽस्ति विकृतिः क्वचित्
I know, O highly fortunate one, you have no defect at any time.
राक्षसेन्द्रे स्थिते भूमौ त्वयि जानाम्यहं सदा
As long as you, lord of the Rākṣasas, remain on earth, I always know this.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो दूतं पूजया मास राघवः ६.१०४.
Having thus spoken, Rāghava then honored the messenger.
विभीषणकृते पश्चात्प्रेषयामास राघवः
Afterwards, Rāghava sent him on behalf of Vibhīṣaṇa.
एवं स सुखसंयुक्तान्कृत्वा सर्वान्द्विजोत्तमान् । एतत्सर्वं ददौ पश्चात्तेभ्यो मुक्तादिकं नृपः
Having thus made all the foremost twice-born comfortable, the king then gave them all these things, including pearls.
ढौकनीयं तथाऽऽयातं तल्लंकायाः पृथग्विधम्
He also brought what was to be distributed, of various kinds, from Laṅkā.
पत्तनानि विचित्राणि ग्रामाणि नगराणि च
The cities, the wondrous towns, and the villages as well.
ततः कुशेश्वरं देवं विधाय च लवेश्वरम्
Then he established the god Kuśeśvara and also Laveśvara.
निवेद्य ब्राह्मणेन्द्राणां कृत्वा वृत्तिं यथोचिताम्
Having informed the foremost of the Brāhmaṇas, he arranged their livelihood as appropriate.
प्रेता लिंगोद्भवां भूमिं पूरयामासुरेव हि
The departed ones indeed filled the land that arose from the liṅga.
यत्किंचित्तत्र संस्थं तु आद्यतीर्थं सुरालयम्
Whatever is established there is the original sacred ford, the abode of the gods.
ततः क्षेमं समुत्पन्नं क्षेत्रे तत्र द्विजोत्तमाः
From then on, well-being arose in that field, O best of twice-born.
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य बृहदश्वो महीपतिः
Then, at some time, Bṛhadaśva, the king,
स दृष्ट्वा विपुलां भूमिं प्रासादैः परिवर्जिताम्
saw the vast land devoid of temples.
शिल्पिनश्च समाहूयानेकांस्तत्र सहस्रशः
He summoned artisans there by the thousands.
भूमौ निखन्यमानायां ततो लिंगानि भूरिशः
As the ground was being dug, many liṅgas were found there.
