Then, bringing them there in the presence of that messenger,
Those Rakshasas of wicked nature who had caused the destruction of the people—
Let all those fierce and cruel ones become extremely miserable.
Deprived of all enjoyments, enduring both cold and heat,
Thus, having pronounced this curse upon them, the best of Rakshasas—
From this day onward, let no Rakshasa go forth; forgive my offense, which was committed out of ignorance.
By Rakshasas of wicked birth, greedy for great quantities of flesh—
Whatever other acts remain, whether ordained by fate or by man,
Go quickly yourself, O Rakshasa, and uproot them.
This alone is the supreme duty, bringing happiness to all the worlds.
When the four-faced emblems are duly worshipped by the demons, O Rakshasa,
In that very moment, they are destroyed; I have seen this myself. While those emblems remain on earth, all the night-wandering demons are restrained.
One must not cross over Rameshvara on the earth.
Moreover, O messenger, another reason has been stated here by the wise.
So how can I go there and break the emblem?
Therefore, that king must be appeased by you on my behalf.
Having spoken thus, he then honored the messenger with jewels from the ocean.
Then those demons, cursed by him, spoke in great distress.
I will never again act for you, O wicked demons.
Therefore, even that best of the Raghus will grant you favor.
Having spoken thus, the king of the demons quickly sent him.
Go swiftly and tell King Kusha these words of mine: 'O lord, grant favor for the sake of food for the distressed.'
Thus addressed, he then set out, accompanied by that messenger.
Then the messenger quickly went and respectfully addressed Kusha.
I saw Vibhishana, O lord, at Rameshvara.
O delight of the Raghus, I conveyed your entire message.
Unaware, O lord, he was wronged by the demons of exceedingly evil intent.
Hearing this from me, he subdued them all; all those sinful, flesh-eating spirits have been restrained.
You shall henceforth be afflicted by hunger and thirst.
We are all cursed; O Lord, grant us your grace.
