Then all the people flee in every direction.
Likewise, many others, having gone, reached the great city called Ayodhya.
Those Rakshasas who formerly arrived there together with your father, O King,
There, the four-faced lingas were established.
And because of that, they continually come there as a consequence.
If any man should worship those lingas,
Therefore, O King, if you do not protect us, what will become of us?
And that field, in particular, is where they always come.
Hearing this, the king immediately informed his ministers.
Then, seeing that Kuśa had arrived, the best of the twice-born who survived the slaughter—
"Why is the kingdom being ruled in this way, as you, lowest of Kshatriyas, cause destruction, and the people are carried off by Rakshasas?"
"Surely you were not born from Rama, but are descended from Ravana."
"Truly, this was declared long ago by those skilled in the science of polity."
"Therefore, you are born of Rakshasas, and with Rakshasas you destroy the best of the twice-born."
"Wherever the worlds are afflicted by faults arising from kings—"
"—from Rakshasas arises the destruction of Brahmins."
From today onward, whoever is led to destruction anywhere—
Having spoken thus, Rāghava immediately sent forth the messenger.
Go, messenger, swiftly; having gone, you must say to Vibhīṣaṇa—
Along with the hosts of rākṣasas, you have spread over my land.
This establishment was made for you by my father, O vilest of rākṣasas.
Even a poisonous tree grows by itself, increasing on its own.
Therefore, from this day onward, if any night-wanderer—
Then I will quickly reach Laṅkā, your city—
And bind you with strong ropes and securely with chains.
Thus addressed, the messenger then went swiftly to the bridge.
Meanwhile, he was questioned by some people: 'Who are you, child, who has come here?'
'I have been sent for a purpose; how shall I proceed there?'
The bridge was broken in the middle by Rāma, whose actions are effortless.
Therefore, here itself your task will attain success, O messenger.
