From whom hosts of Indra's weapons emerge by the thousands.
Rama took that, his eyes wide with astonishment.
A marvel, crafted from jewels, dispelling darkness.
That, created by the god of gods, stands near my hermitage.
On its shore, I saw an unsurpassed wonder.
Once, O foremost of the Raghus, I rose at midnight.
As long as that celestial chariot, adorned with hosts of apsaras, remains, the king seated there is praised by the kinnaras.
He wears this radiant, flawless jewel ornament around his neck.
Then, having descended from the splendid chariot, he clung to Skanda, O scion of Raghu.
After that, he drew his body out from the water.
As he eats the great flesh, O Raghava, bit by bit,
Then, after a long time, having attained satisfaction, purified and delighted, he became joyful.
Meanwhile, I quickly went and questioned the king out of curiosity.
O best among those who ride celestial chariots, please wait for a moment.
Hearing this, he stood facing me and offered his respectful salutation.
This king, whom I questioned, stood before me, having made his obeisance, served by apsaras, gandharvas, and kinnaras.
Here, having arrived at the edge of the lake, he consumed the great flesh.
Surely, favorable destiny has brought you here to me.
The sight of the virtuous is holy; for the virtuous are like sacred places.
Therefore, O great sage, I will tell you everything—how I came to have this condemned food and such wealth.
I was once a king named Shveta, O great sage.
I gave nothing, nor did I offer anything into the fire, O descendant of Raghu.
Whatever jewel I saw or did not see on the earth, I seized it all by force from everyone here.
Then, after a long time, I was overcome by old age and lost my strength.
Then, afflicted by old age, I attained supreme detachment.
Thereafter, with my throat parched by hunger, I bathed in these auspicious waters.
Entering these sacred waters, I reached the state of dissolution—death.
Then, attendants took me up with another body.
They adorned me with divine garlands and smeared me with celestial fragrances.
After that, those divine attendants brought me into the midst of Brahmā’s assembly.
