Then, at dawn, when the sun's disk had risen clear—
With Sugrīva, Suṣeṇa, Tārā, and also Kumuda,
With Gavākṣa, Nala, and likewise Jāmbavat,
Then, at the proper time, Rāghava set out toward Laṅkā.
He arrived at that very moment at the great city called Laṅkā.
Then Vibhīṣaṇa, seeing the radiant Puṣpaka rising, together with all his ministers, attendants, and sons—
Then, seeing Rāma at a great distance, Vibhīṣaṇa approached.
Having arrived, he embraced Vibhīṣaṇa with respect and affection.
Upon reaching Vibhīṣaṇa’s house, he sat upon the auspicious throne.
Then Vibhīṣaṇa reported everything to him.
Standing with hands joined in reverence, he spoke humbly.
His face concealed by a flood of tears, he sighed again.
Then he spoke truthfully, for the benefit of Vibhīṣaṇa.
I have renounced the kingdom, O foremost among Rākṣasas.
Without it, I cannot endure even a moment among mortals.
I have come to you, Vibhīṣaṇa, for the sake of learning and guidance.
This prosperity arising from kingship produces pride in men.
All the immortals, beginning with Śakra, must always be honored by you; those who are respected cause your kingdom to be everlasting.
Let my words be true: for this reason I have come.
Sudden destruction has come; therefore, the gods must always be honored. My body alone should be regarded by all the night-dwellers.
Likewise, all the night-dwellers must be restrained by you, Vibhīṣaṇa.
But if you abandon me, my life will pass away among mortals.
Therefore, O Lord, you ought to take me there as well.
Therefore, you must not ever act falsely toward me.
Here, on my own bridge, I establish the auspicious triple form of Śaṅkara, with devotion, for as long as the moon, sun, and stars endure.
Having spoken thus, the best of the Raghus addressed Vibhīṣaṇa, the king of the Rākṣasas.
He recounted the wondrous tales of battles that had already taken place in the past.
He praised those mighty and valiant Rākṣasas who were stronger than others.
Then, when the eleventh day arrived, Raghunandana set forth.
Accompanied by those monkeys, with Vibhīṣaṇa at the forefront, and with a mind purified by faith, both in the middle and at the beginning, he proceeded.
