सा च्छाया दृश्यते देहे द्वितीया नृपसत्तम
There, O best of kings, the second shadow again appeared on his body.
ततो दुःखाभिसंतप्तो गतस्तत्रैव तत्क्षणात्
Afflicted by sorrow, he immediately returned there.
स ज्ञात्वा तीर्थमाहात्म्यं परं पार्थिवसत्तमः दानं दत्त्वा द्विजाग्रेभ्यः प्रविष्टो हव्यवाहनम्
Knowing the great sanctity of the holy place, the foremost of kings gave gifts to the best of brāhmaṇas and entered the sacred fire.
ततो विमानमारुह्य परित्यज्य कलेवरम्
Then, ascending a celestial chariot, he cast off his mortal body.
शिवलोकमनुप्राप्ते तस्मिन्पार्थिवसत्तमे
That best of kings attained the world of Śiva.
तीर्थेभ्यस्तु परं तीर्थमिदं वै पावनं परम् 7.3.31.
Among all holy places, this is the supreme and most purifying one.
ततः प्रभृति तत्तीर्थं ख्यातं च धरणीतले
From that time, this holy place became renowned on earth.
रक्तानुबन्धमित्येव तस्मात्तत्कीर्त्त्यते क्षितौ
Therefore, it is called Raktānubandha and is thus celebrated on earth.
तत्र संक्रमणे भानोर्यः स्नानं कुरुते नरः
Whoever bathes there at the sun’s crossing—
पितृक्षेत्रे गयायां च श्राद्धं यः कुरुते नरः
—or performs śrāddha in Gayā, the field of the ancestors—
चन्द्रसूर्योपरागे वा गोदानं नृपसत्तम
O best of kings, the gift of a cow is to be made during an eclipse of the moon or sun.
पुलस्त्य उवाच महाविनायकं गच्छेत्ततः पार्थिवसत्तम
Pulastya said: Then, O foremost of kings, one should proceed to the great Vināyaka.
ययातिरुवाच कथं महत्त्वमगमत्पूर्वं तत्र विनायकः
Yayāti said: How did Vināyaka attain greatness there in former times?
विनोदार्थं चकाराथ बालकं सुकुमारकम्
For amusement, he then created a delicate child.
लेपाभावाच्छिरोहीनं शेषांगावयवं नृप
Because of the absence of ointment, O king, the child was headless, though the rest of its limbs were present.
लेपमानय भद्रं ते शिरोऽर्थं स्कन्द सत्वरम्
Bring ointment quickly, Skanda, for the sake of the head; may it be auspicious for you.
ततो गौरीसमादेशाल्लेपालब्धौ नृपोत्तम
Then, by Gaurī's command, ointment was obtained, O best of kings.
तस्मिन्नियोजयामास गात्रे लेपसमुद्भवे
On the body, where the ointment appeared, it was applied.
ब्रुवंत्याश्चापि पार्वत्या मा मेति च मुहुर्मुहुः
And Parvatī kept repeatedly saying, 'Do not touch me.'
विशेषान्नायकत्वं च गात्रेभ्यः समजायत
Because of this, leadership arose especially from the limbs.
त्रिगंभीरं चतुर्हस्तं सप्तरक्तं महीपते 7.3.32.
O king, he was threefold deep, four-armed, and sevenfold red.
त्रिविस्तीर्णं महाराज दृष्ट्वा गौरी सुविस्मिता
Seeing him threefold wide, O great king, Gaurī was greatly astonished.
स सजीवः कृतो देव्या समुत्तस्थौ च तत्क्षणात्
Made alive by the goddess, he immediately arose at that moment.
तं दृष्ट्वा चाद्भुताकारं प्रोक्त्वा पुत्रं मुहुर्मुहुः
Seeing him of wondrous form, she kept calling him 'son' again and again.
ततोऽब्रवीत्सुतं देव ममैव गात्रलेपजम्
Then the goddess said to her son: 'This one is born from my body's ointment.'
महत्त्विदं शिरः प्रोक्तं त्वया स्कन्देन योजितम्
This head, which Skanda joined, is declared to be great by you.
विशेषान्नायकत्वं च गात्रे चास्य यतः स्थितम्
Because of this, leadership is established in his body.
गणानां चैव सर्वेषामाधिपत्यं नगात्मजे
O daughter of the mountain, he is granted lordship over all the Gaṇas.
सर्वकार्येषु ये मर्त्याः पूर्वमेनं गणाधिपम्
Those mortals who, before undertaking any action, honor this Lord of the Gaṇas—
ततोऽस्य प्रददौ स्कन्दः प्रक्रीडार्थं कुठारकम्
Then Skanda gave him a small axe for play.
