Then, when the sage Durvasa had left that place,
Take up this sword quickly and strike me down, O Lord.
Then Rama, after a long time, remembered the vow he himself had made.
Then he began to ponder deeply, his heart troubled.
Seeing him with a sorrowful face, sighing again and again,
This alone is the highest duty, especially for kings,
Therefore, O Lord, you yourself have spoken this before me,
Thus, O dear one, I have come out of fear of the sage Durvasa,
Then, after consulting for a long time with his ministers, the king
Afterwards addressed Lakshmana, who stood humbly and respectfully,
Go, Lakshmana, you are released by me; quickly depart to another land,
By me, your audience shall never again be sought, in any way,
Hearing those words, he then bowed down deeply,
Without speaking to anyone, he entered his own residence,
Then he went to the Sarayu, and after immersing himself in its waters,
He assumed the lotus posture and placed himself in his own self,
Then Raghava saw that great energy ascending to the sky,
Then, when the mortal body was abandoned, by that energy in that instant,
His body fell swiftly to the earth, like wood or clay,
Then Raghava, hearing that Lakshmana's life had departed,
He himself went to that place, accompanied by his ministers and friends,
Alas, my son! Having abandoned me, why have you set out for heaven?
Even in that great forest, as I was leaving the city, I was then followed by you, holding yourself together.
And when the powerful demon named Kabandha appeared,
By whom, in battle, the night-stalker of such form was struck down, the one who had defeated Indra,
By whom the fierce demoness Śūrpaṇakhā was destroyed,
Relying on whose strength of arms, I destroyed the night-dwelling demons,
Alas, my child, where have you gone, leaving behind your own brother and me?
Surrounded by his mothers, he was afflicted, overwhelmed by great sorrow.
Then his ministers, seeing him grieving, spoke to the best of the Raghus, who was lamenting, surrounded by women.
