अत्र भूमितले विप्र सर्वेषां तीर्थमुत्तमम् वासुदेवोऽथवा ब्रह्मा ह्येतच्छीघ्रं वदस्व मे
O brāhmaṇa, on this earth, which is the supreme pilgrimage for all—Vāsudeva or Brahmā? Tell me this quickly.
येनाहं सर्वलोकस्य हितार्थं तप आददे
By which I may undertake austerity for the welfare of all the worlds.
तिस्रः कोट्योर्धकोटी च तीर्थानामिह भूतले
There are thirty million and more sacred places here on earth.
अष्टषष्टिस्तथा राजन्क्षेत्राणामस्ति भूतले
And, O king, there are sixty-eight fields upon the earth.
तथा सर्वे सुरास्तुष्टा ब्रह्मविष्णु शिवादयः
Thus, all the gods are pleased, including Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and others.
हाटकेश्वरदेवस्य क्षेत्रं पातकनाशनम्
The field of Haṭakeśvara Deva is the destroyer of sins.
शीघ्रमाराधिता सम्यक्छ्रद्धायुक्तैर्नरैर्भुवि आराधय महाभाग द्रुतं सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि
If worshipped swiftly and properly by men endowed with faith on earth, O fortunate one, worship and you will quickly attain perfection.
एवमुक्तः स तेनाथ गत्वा तत्क्षेत्रमुत्तमम् ६.९५.
Thus addressed by him, he then went to that supreme field.
ब्रह्मचर्यपरो भूत्वा शुचिर्व्रतपरायणः
Becoming devoted to celibacy, pure, and dedicated to vows,
एवमाराध्यतस्तत्र गन्धपुष्पानुलेपनैः
Thus, he worshipped there with fragrances, flowers, and ointments.
देव्युवाच परितुष्टास्मि ते वत्स व्रतेनानेन नित्यथः
The goddess spoke: Child, I am pleased with you for your constant observance of this vow.
तद्ब्रूहि येन ते सर्वं प्रकरोमि हृदि स्थितम्
Now tell me what is held in your heart, so that I may fulfill it entirely.
येन तेषां भवेत्सौख्यं मत्प्रसादादनुत्तमम्
By which my grace may grant them unsurpassed happiness.
तस्माद्देहि महाभागे ज्ञानयुक्तानि भूरिशः
Therefore, O greatly fortunate one, bestow abundant knowledge upon me.
यानि जानंति भूपृष्ठे मम पार्श्वे स्थितान्यपि ॥ अपराधं सदा लोके परदारादि यत्कृतम्
Those who dwell upon the earth, even those who stand by my side, know offenses in the world, such as adultery and others.
अनुरूपं ततस्तस्य पातकस्य विनिग्रहम्
Accordingly, let there be suitable restraint for such transgressions.
मंत्रग्रामं तथा देवि मम देहि पृथग्विधम्
O goddess, grant me the collection of mantras, each in its distinct form.
येन स्युर्मनुजाः सर्वे मम राज्ये सुखान्विताः ६.९५.
By which all people in my kingdom may be endowed with happiness.
नाहं देवि करिष्यामि हस्त्यश्वरथसंग्रहम् गृहीतैः सर्वलोकानां तस्मात्तन्न ममेप्सितम्
O goddess, I will not amass elephants, horses, or chariots; I do not desire what is seized from all the worlds.
प्रारब्धं यन्न केनापि कृतं न च करिष्यति
What has been begun by anyone, or will not be done, I do not wish for.
तथाप्येवं करिष्यामि तव दास्यामि कृत्स्नशः
Yet even so, I will act thus and give you everything in full.
गृह्यन्ते येन ते सर्वे व्याधयोऽपि सुदारुणाः
By which all diseases, even the most severe, are taken away.
यदि दृष्टिपथात्तुभ्यं क्वचिद्यास्यंति दूरतः
If, from your sight, they depart somewhere far away,
यदा त्वं पृथिवीपाल स्वर्गं यास्यसि भूतलात्
When you, O ruler of the earth, depart from the world and ascend to heaven,
सर्वे मंत्रास्तथाऽस्त्राणि ममवाक्यादसंशयम्
All mantras and weapons, without doubt, will be from my command.
बाढमित्येव तेनोक्ते तत्क्षणाद्द्विजसत्तमाः
When he replied, 'So be it,' at that moment, O best of twice-born,
ज्ञानसंपत्प्रयुक्तानि यादृशानि महात्मना
Those endowed with wisdom, as given by the great soul,
व्याधयो यैश्च गृह्यंते मुच्यंते स्वेच्छया सदा ६.९५.
And by which diseases are seized and always released at will.
ततस्तं सकलं प्राप्य प्रसादं चंडिकोद्भवम्
Then, having obtained all that favor which arose from Caṇḍikā,
एकां मुक्त्वा निजां भार्यामेकं दशरथं सुतम्
Leaving only his own wife and one son of Daśaratha,
