स्थातव्यं च तथात्रैव उभाभ्यामपि सादरम् ६.८८.
And both must remain here with respect, just as before.
तयोस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा उभे ते देवते ततः
Hearing those words from both, the goddesses then,
एतस्मिन्नंतरे तस्मात्कुण्डाच्छतसहस्रशः
Meanwhile, from that altar, thousands upon thousands
एका गजमुखी तत्र तथान्या तुरगानना
One had the face of an elephant, and another the face of a horse.
तिर्यञ्च वपुषश्चान्या वक्त्रैर्मानुषसंभवैः
Others had animal forms, with faces arising from human origin.
गुह्य स्थानस्थितैर्वक्त्रैरेकाश्चान्या हृदिस्थितैः
Some had faces situated in secret places, and others had faces located in the heart.
एकहस्ता द्विहस्ताश्च पञ्चहस्तास्तथापराः
Some had one hand, others two hands, and yet others five hands.
बहुपादा विपादाश्च एकपादास्तथापराः
There were those with many feet, those with two feet, and others with only one foot.
एकनेत्रा द्विनेत्राश्च त्रिनेत्राश्च तथापराः
Some had one eye, others two eyes, and yet others three eyes.
वृषवानरसिंहाजव्याघ्रसर्पास्थिताः पराः
Others took the forms of bull, monkey, lion, goat, tiger, and serpent.
कूर्मकुक्कुटसर्पादिसमारूढाः सहस्रशः नृत्यंत्यश्च हसंत्यश्च क्रीडासक्ताः परस्परम् ॥ ६.८८.
Thousands were mounted on tortoises, cocks, serpents, and the like; they danced, laughed, and were absorbed in play with one another.
ह्रस्वदन्त्यो विदंत्यश्च दीर्घदन्त्यो विभीषणाः
Some had short teeth, others protruding teeth, and some had long, terrifying teeth.
लंबकर्ण्यो विकर्ण्यश्च शूर्पकर्ण्यस्तथा पराः
Some had hanging ears, others deformed ears, and yet others had ears like winnowing baskets.
एकवस्त्रा विवस्त्राश्च बहुवस्त्रास्तथा पराः
Some wore a single garment, others were unclothed, and yet others wore many garments.
खङ्गहस्ताः शराहस्ताः कुंतहस्ताश्च भीषणाः शूलमुद्गरहस्ताश्च भुशुंडिकरभूषिताः
Some held swords, some held arrows, and others, terrifying, held spears; some bore tridents and maces, adorned with clubs and elephant goads.
अथ ताभ्यां तथाऽऽकर्ण्य ताः सर्वा हर्षसंयुताः
Then, having heard thus from those two, all of them became filled with joy.
ततस्ते तत्समालोक्य बलं देवीसमुद्रवम्
Then, seeing that force, the goddess rushed forth.
विषण्णवदनाः सर्वे भयभीता समंततः
All of them became downcast in face, seized by fear on every side.
बालवृद्धसमोपेतं तेषां राष्ट्रं दुरात्मनाम्
Their kingdom, filled with both children and elders, belonged to the wicked.
एवं निर्वास्य तद्राष्ट्रं सर्वास्ता हर्षसंयुताः ६.८८.
Thus, having expelled that kingdom, all of them were filled with joy.
उद्वासितस्तथा सर्वो देशस्तेषां स वै महान् निवासाय ततः स्थानं किंचिच्चावेद्यतां हि नः
Thus, all that great land of theirs was vacated; now, let a place for their dwelling be indicated to us.
संध्याकालप्रकाशे च तासां गर्भोऽस्तु वो द्रुतम्
And at the time of twilight, let conception quickly occur among you.
रुदंत्यो या विनिर्यांति चत्वरेषु त्रिकेषु च
Those women who weep as they go out into crossroads and three-way junctions,
उच्छिष्टा याः प्रसर्पंति रमन्ते च स्वपंति च
Those who are impure, who crawl about, who indulge themselves and sleep,
सूतिकाभवने यस्मिन्नुच्छिष्टं चोपजायते
Wherever impurity arises in the birthing chamber,
न षष्ठीजागरो यस्य बालकस्य भविष्यति
For the child for whom the sixth-night vigil is not observed,
नाशं यास्यति वा यत्र पावकः सूतिकागृहे
Where fire does not enter the birthing house, there will be destruction,
मांगल्यैः संपरित्यक्तं यद्भवेत्सूतिकागृहम्
The birthing house that is abandoned by auspicious rites,
संध्यायां बालका ये वा स्वपंत्याकाशदेशगाः ६.८८.
The children who sleep at twilight in open spaces,
यस्य जन्मदिने प्राप्ते वर्षांते क्रियते न च
On whose birthday, at the year's end, no rite is performed,
