ततस्तुष्टिं गतो ब्रह्मा वर्षांते तस्य शार्ङ्गिणः
Then Brahma, pleased at the end of the year by the wielder of the Sharnga bow,
तव प्रसादात्सद्वक्त्रा भूयादेतन्ममेप्सितम्
By your grace, O noble one, may that which I desire be granted from your auspicious mouth.
सुभद्रा नाम विख्याता वीरसूः पतिवल्लभा
Subhadra, renowned by name, giver of heroes, beloved of her husband,
एतद्रूपां पुमान्योऽत्र पूजयिष्यति भक्तितः
Any man who worships her in this form with devotion,
द्वादश्यां माघमासस्य गंधपुष्पानुलेपनैः
On the twelfth day of the month of Magha, with fragrant flowers and ointments,
या नारी पतिना त्यक्ता वंध्या वा भक्तिसंयुता
Any woman abandoned by her husband or barren, who is endowed with devotion,
भविष्यति सुपुत्राढ्या सुभगा सा सुखान्विता
She will become blessed with good children, fortunate, and accompanied by happiness.
एवमुक्त्वा चतुर्वक्त्रो विरराम ततः परम् ६.८४.
Having spoken thus, the four-faced one ceased thereafter.
तामादाय विशालाक्षीं चंद्रबिंबसमाननाम्
Taking her, the wide-eyed one whose face resembled the moon's orb,
अवतीर्णा धरापृष्ठे लक्ष्मीशापप्रपीडिता
She descended upon the earth, afflicted by Lakshmi's curse.
उपयेमे सुतः पांडोर्यां पार्थश्चारुहासिनीम्
The son of Pandu married her, the one with lovely smiles.
एतद्वः सर्वमाख्यातं माधबीजन्मसम्भवम्
All this has been related to you—the origin of Madhavi's birth.
यश्चैतत्पठते मर्त्यो भक्त्या युक्तः शृणोति वा
Whoever, mortal, recites this or hears it with devotion,
इति श्रीस्कांदे महापुराण एकाशीतिसाहस्र्यां संहितायां षष्ठे नागरखण्डे हाटकेश्वरक्षेत्रमाहात्म्ये सुपर्णाख्यतीर्थमाहात्म्ये माधव्या अश्वमुख्याः श्रीकृष्णतपश्चर्यया पद्मादत्तशापविमुक्तिपूर्वक सुभद्रात्वप्राप्तिवर्णनंनाम चतुरशीतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the eighty-fourth chapter, named 'The Description of Subhadra's Attainment after Release from Padma's Curse through Krishna's Austerity,' in the greatness of the Suparna-tirtha at Hatakeshvara, in the Nagarakhanda, the sixth section of the glorious Skanda Mahapurana, comprising eighty-one thousand verses.
परिणामोद्भवं सर्वं श्रुतमस्माभिरद्य तत्
Today we have heard all that has arisen from transformation.
तेन यत्कमला शप्ता ब्राह्मणेन महात्मना
By that, O Kamala, you were cursed by the great-souled Brahmin.
गजवक्त्रा समुत्पन्ना महाविस्मयकारिणी
From that, you were born with an elephant face, causing great wonder.
सा प्रोक्ता हरिणा तिष्ठ किञ्चित्कालांतरे शुभे
She was told by Hari, 'Wait for a little while, O auspicious one.'
ततोऽहं मेदिनीपृष्ठे ह्यवतीर्य समुद्रजे
Then I descended to the surface of the earth, near the ocean.
अवज्ञायाथ सा तस्य तद्वाक्यं शार्ङ्गधन्विनः
But she disregarded the words of that wielder of the Śārṅga bow.
एतत्क्षेत्रं समासाद्य त्रिकालं स्नानमाचरत्
Arriving at this sacred place, she performed bathing rites three times a day.
तामुवाच ततो ब्रह्मा वर्षांते तुष्टिमागतः
Then, at the end of the year, Brahmā, pleased, spoke to her.
ब्राह्मणेन सुक्रुद्धेन कस्मिश्चित्कारणांतरे
By a certain reason, she was cursed by the Brahmin, who was greatly enraged.
तस्मात्तद्रूपिणीं भूयो मां कुरुष्व पितामह ६.८५.
Therefore, O Grandfather, make me again as I was before.
तव भद्रे विशेषेण तस्मात्त्वं स्वगृहं व्रज
Especially for you, O blessed one, therefore return to your own abode.
महत्त्वं ते मया दत्तमद्यप्रभृति शोभने
From today onward, I have granted you greatness, O beautiful one.
गजवक्त्रां नरो यस्त्वां पूजयिष्यति भक्तितः
Any man who worships you with devotion in your elephant-faced form,
द्वितीयादिवसे यस्त्वां महालक्ष्मीरिति ब्रुवन्
Or who, on the second day, addresses you as Mahālakṣmī,
सप्तजन्मांतराण्येव न भविष्यति सोऽधनः
For seven lifetimes, that person will never be poor.
साऽपि हृष्टा गता देवी यत्र तिष्ठति केशवः
Then, delighted, the goddess went to where Keśava resides.
