then all the gods there, personally honored by Daksha, surrounded the entire altar, which was within the pavilion.
Then Daksha, filled with affection, spoke to the Grandfather (Brahma).
Let our daughter Sati herself become fortunate by whomsoever she chooses.
He too, replying 'So be it,' with joy in his heart,
performed the giving-away ceremony there itself, according to the prescribed rite, in the presence of the Mothers, by the Creator together with Sati, as was proper.
Then, approaching the altar, all was done according to the household ritual.
As she curiously gazed upon his beautiful limbs one by one,
leaving only one face uncovered, the rest of hers was veiled with cloth.
Out of modesty before Shambhu, she did not look directly at his face.
Then, in order to see her, he devised a means.
He threw many damp sticks into the fire and did not stir up the flames.
At that moment, smoke arose all around.
Then the Lord, the destroyer of Tripura, whose eyes were reddened by smoke,
Thereupon, Pitāmaha lifted the garment towards Satī’s face.
His seed then fell, and from seeing that, at once, Padmasambhava covered it with a heap of sand.
Then the blessed Śambhu, knowing this with his divine vision,
"What is this sinful and reproachable act you have done?"
You know, O Brahmā, that this web of actions is not unknown to Śaṅkara; whatever exists in the three worlds, whether moving or unmoving.
Therefore, touch your own head, O Brahman, without doubt; there, the Bull-bannered One himself stood in that very form.
Then, overwhelmed with shame, he stood with his head bowed, O twice-born ones.
Then, seized by shame, he bowed down to Maheśvara.
"O Lord, tell me the penance for the purification of this sin."
Perform austerity, absorbed in meditation, devoted to my worship.
Everywhere on earth, this will become known as Rudraśiras by name.
Because this act, which pertains to men, has now been performed by you, therefore, you shall become a man and wander upon the earth.
Whoever, seeing you in this form, will ask you,
And whoever, out of curiosity, hears all your deeds,
In whatever way people recount this act of yours,
O Brahman, this indeed is declared as your penance.
And this, your seed, has fallen in the midst of the altar.
