शंकरोऽप्यक्षिपत्तत्र कामबाणप्रपीडितः
Śaṃkara, tormented by the arrows of desire, also cast it there.
पावकोऽपि भृशं तेन कल्पाग्निसदृशेन च
Agni too was greatly afflicted by it, which was like the fire at the end of an age.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे प्राप्ता भ्रममाणा इतस्ततः
Meanwhile, they arrived, wandering here and there.
तासां निदेशयामास स्वयमेव शतक्रतुः
Then Śatakratu himself instructed them.
अत्र संपत्स्यते पुत्रो द्वादशार्कसमप्रभः
Here, a son will be born, radiant as twelve suns.
इति श्रीस्कादे महापुराण एकाशीतिसाहस्र्यां संहितायां षष्ठे नागर खंडे हाटकेश्वरक्षेत्रमाहात्म्ये कार्तिकेयोत्पत्तिवृत्तांतवर्णनंनाम सप्ततितमोऽध्यायः ॥ ६.७०.
Thus ends the seventieth chapter, called 'The Account of the Birth of Kārtikeya,' in the section on the greatness of the Hāṭakeśvara field, in the sixth book, in the eighty-one-thousand-verse Skanda Mahāpurāṇa.
सूतिकागृहधर्मे यत्तच्चक्रुस्तस्य सर्वशः
All the prescribed rites for the lying-in chamber were performed for him.
अथान्यदिवसे बालो द्वादशार्कसमद्युतिः
Then, on another day, the boy shone with the radiance of twelve suns.
यथासौ जातमात्रस्तु प्ररुरोद सुदुःखितः
As soon as he was born, he cried out in great distress.
महासेनोऽपि संवीक्ष्य मातॄस्ताः समुपागताः
Mahāsena, seeing those Mothers who had approached,
एकैकस्याः पृथक्तेन प्रपपौ प्रयतः स्तनम्
With devotion, he drank from each of her breasts separately.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे प्राप्ता ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादयः
Meanwhile, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and others arrived there.
महोत्सवोऽथ संजज्ञे तस्मिन्स्थाने निरर्गलः
Then, in that place, a great and unrestrained festival arose.
रंभाद्या ननृतुस्तस्य विलासिन्यो दिवौकसाम्
Rambha and other celestial maidens danced there, delighting the gods.
ततस्तु देवताः सर्वास्तस्य नाम प्रचक्रिरे
Then all the gods proclaimed his name.
अथ तस्य कुमा रस्य तदा तत्राभिषेचनम् ६.७१.
Then, at that time and place, the consecration of that Kumara was performed.
तस्य शक्तिः स्वयं दत्ता विधिनाऽद्भुतदर्शना
His shakti, wondrous to behold, was given to him by the prescribed rite.
मयूरो वाहनार्थाय त्र्यंबकेण सुशीघ्रतः
A peacock was swiftly given by Tryambaka for use as his mount.
ततोऽभीष्टानि शस्त्राणि देवैः सर्वैः पृथक्पृथक्
Then, all the gods individually bestowed upon him the desired weapons.
ततस्तमग्रतः कृत्वा सेनानाथं सुरेश्वराः
Then, placing him at the forefront, the lords of the gods made him commander of the army.
तारकोऽपि समालोक्य देवान्स्वयमुपागतान्
Tāraka, seeing that the gods themselves had come,
ततोऽभूत्सुमहद्युद्धं देवानां दानवैः सह
Then there was a great battle between the gods and the demons.
अथ स्कन्देन संवीक्ष्य दूरस्थं तारकं रणे
Then Skanda, perceiving Tāraka standing far off in the battle,
अथासौ हृदयं भित्त्वा तस्य दैत्यस्य दारुणा
He pierced the heart of that fierce demon.
तारकस्तु गतो नाशं मुक्तः प्राणैश्च तत्क्षणात्
Tāraka perished, his life departing at that very moment.
स्तोत्रैर्बहुविधैः स्तुत्वा प्रोचुस्तस्मिन्हते सति ॥ गताश्च त्रिदिवं तूर्णं सह शक्रेण निर्भयाः ।१ ६.७१.
Having praised him with many kinds of hymns, when he was slain, they quickly went to heaven, fearless, along with Indra.
स्कन्दोऽपि तां समादाय शक्तिं तत्र पुरोत्तमे
Skanda also took up that shakti in that most excellent place.
ऋषय ऊचुः रक्तशृंगः कथं तेन निश्चलोऽपि दृढीकृतः
The sages said: How was Raktaśṛṅga, though unmoving, made firm by him?
रक्तशृङ्गः प्रचलितः स्वस्थानादतिवेगतः
Raktaśṛṅga, shaken, moved violently from his own place.
तस्य दैत्यस्य पातेन यथान्ये पर्व तोत्तमाः
By the fall of that demon, just as with other great mountains,
