Bhārgava spares neither child nor elder.
He himself slew the kings, both those at their side and others.
In the same way, he takes up the blood and has it taken up with reverence.
Thus, having made the whole earth devoid of Kshatriyas, O destroyer of the Bhṛgus,
Then, after bathing in those streams of blood and gathering many sesame seeds,
In the presence of all the Brahmins and other ascetics,
Then, having made the world free of Kshatriyas, he performed the horse sacrifice.
Then the Brahmins, having obtained their boon, spoke to that best of the Bhṛgus.
Therefore, grant me a place, having made way yourself.
If you do not heed my words today, O lord of rivers,
Then he withdrew as much as she desired.
Thus ends the sixty-eighth chapter, named 'The Account of the Ocean's Withdrawal after the Gift of Land by Paraśurāma,' in the section on the greatness of the Hāṭakeśvara field, in the sixth Nāgara-khaṇḍa of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, comprising eighty-one thousand verses.
They begot sons, the kṣetrajā, on the Brahmins; those kṣetrajā, being like Kshatriyas, grew in strength.
Then all those Brahmins fell into a state of humiliation.
O Rāma, Rāma, mighty-armed one, the earth which you gave us—therefore, give it to us again, having slain those base Kshatriyas.
Then Rāma, seized by anger, together with those Śavaras,
There itself, having slain the Kshatriyas and taken much of their blood,
He gave the earth again to the Brahmins at the horse sacrifice.
Thus, by him, the earth was made entirely devoid of Kshatriyas.
And the ancestors were satisfied by that great soul with the blood.
When the twenty-first day arrived, then came the offering to the ancestors.
O Rama, O Rama, greatly fortunate one, abandon this act, for it is censured.
The act you have performed, no other will accomplish.
Therefore, we are pleased, child, and will grant you the desire of your heart; ask swiftly, for even the gods find it difficult to obtain.
Rama said: If my ancestors are pleased and grant me what I desire, then let this sacred place, renowned in the world by my name, be free from the stain of blood and served by noble ascetics.
The ancestors said: The pit you have made for the offering to the ancestors will become known throughout the three worlds as 'Rama Lake.'
There, people endowed with devotion will indeed offer oblations to their ancestors.
On the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, in the month of Bhādrapada, a person—
Even one who has become a departed soul or who resides in hell—
Sūta said: And Rama performed austerities there, free from anger.
