He asked, 'What is all this? How has this distress arisen?'
By whom has my cow been battered with blows?
Where is my aged father today, and my mother, fond of her son?
Then all the ascetics told him the whole story.
Then all the brothers spoke words like the fall of thunderbolts.
They saw their mother, wounded in all her limbs, barely alive, afflicted with pain.
Then, after weeping for a long time and lamenting again and again,
when the cremation was completed, they made a proper pit as was fitting.
Then Rama, the foremost among wielders of weapons, was addressed by the other ascetics.
Then Jamadagni’s son was repeatedly addressed in many ways by the ascetics.
Thereupon Rama, after sighing deeply, spoke to the great sages.
My father was slain by a kshatriya without any offense.
Therefore, if I do not make the earth free of kshatriyas,
because of the sin committed by that murderer of my father and mother,
therefore, I will satisfy my father with the blood of that one and of other wicked kshatriyas, not with water.
They were all struck with the utmost astonishment and said nothing further.
Along with all the Shabaras, Pulindas, and Medakas,
Likewise, Arjuna, having heard that the best of the Bhargavas had come,
then, seeing him face to face, he went out for battle.
Then there was a great battle between the Pulindas and the best of the twice-born.
Then all the Haihayas, with arrows like venomous serpents,
were afflicted by the sin arising from brahminicide.
No one there was able to display any heroism.
Then, seeing his army broken, the lord of the Haihayas, though enraged and making every effort, was unable to rally them.
Then he drew forth his sword from the scabbard, perfectly pure.
Rāvaṇa, the terror of the worlds, was defeated by the mace of Rudra.
By those auspicious thousand arms, the flow of the Narmadā was restrained.
By the will of fate, no weapon could remove them in any way.
At that moment, Rāma arrived, overcome with wrath.
O sinful lord of the Haihayas, by whose arms my father—
