In whatever house she is born, within six months in that place—
This, your daughter, O king, as described, is a poison-maiden.
Therefore, abandon her and be happy, O ruler of men.
Yet, for me, the karma arising from another body will bear fruit.
Whether it is auspicious or sinful, it cannot be protected.
With whatever body, whatever actions a person performs—
In whatever state or condition, whatever good or bad deed is done here—
The deeds done previously with all the senses here do not perish.
Lifespan, actions, wealth, knowledge, and even death—
Just as on trees and vines there are flowers and fruits—
Whatever good or bad deed was done before, in whatever way and by whom—
Just as among a thousand cows, a calf finds its mother—
No person on earth experiences the results of actions done by another body.
Otherwise, a wise person is honored for intellect pregnant with scripture.
Pleasures and pains created by oneself come to the embodied being.
Even if one runs very swiftly, one's own karma pursues him.
Just as shadow and sunlight are always closely joined to each other—
Whatever happiness or sorrow is to be experienced, by whom and where—
The measure of actions is the cause for the arising of pleasure and pain.
Just as when oil is exhausted, a lamp attains extinction—
Neither mantras, nor austerity, nor charity, nor pilgrimage, nor self-restraint—
Food and drink decay, and whatever is eaten is consumed there.
Therefore, all that is experienced by embodied beings here arises from actions performed.
What is unprotected remains, what is protected by fate is secure; what is struck down by fate perishes.
Thus ends the sixty-first chapter, entitled 'The Origin of the Poison-Maiden,' in the section on the greatness of the Hāṭakeśvara field, in the Nāgara division of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, comprising eighty-one thousand verses.
Even though so advised by astrologers, he did not abandon the poison-maiden.
For by her, the destruction of Śarmaṇa was brought about, as ordained by her father.
Meanwhile, the enemies of that king, filled with anger, began to afflict the kingdom from all sides.
Then that king, enraged and surrounded by his own army,
Having reached those enemies, he engaged in a great battle.
