ततो माहेश्वरं लिंगं वटाधस्ताद्विधाय सः
Then he established the Maheśvara liṅga beneath the banyan tree.
निवेश्य च तथा दिव्यं ब्राह्मणेभ्यो न्यवेदयत् भवद्भिः सकला चास्य चिन्ताकार्या सदैव हि
Having thus installed the divine emblem, he informed the brāhmaṇas, saying, 'You must always attend to all matters concerning it.'
तथा वंशोद्भवा ये च पुत्राः पौत्रास्तथापरे
In the same way, those born in the lineage, as well as sons, grandsons, and others—
ततो जगाम विदुरः स्वपुरं प्रति हर्षितः ६.५९.
Then Vidura, delighted, returned to his own city.
माघमासस्य सप्तम्यां सूर्यवारेण यो नरः
On the seventh day of the month of Māgha, when it falls on a Sunday, any man—
शिवं वा सोमवारेण शुक्लाष्टम्यां विशेषतः
Or on a Monday, especially on the bright eighth day, who worships Śiva—
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन देवानां तत्त्रयं शुभम्
Therefore, with all effort, that auspicious triad of the gods should be honored there.
तत्र सिद्धिं गताः पूर्वं मुनयः संशितव्रताः
There, in former times, sages of firm vows attained success.
ततस्तत्सिद्धिदं ज्ञात्वा लिंगं वै पाकशासनः
Knowing that liṅga to be the bestower of success, Pākashāsana (Indra) also worshipped it.
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य विदुरस्तत्र चागतः
Then, after some time, Vidura also arrived there.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु वागुवाचाशरीरिणी
At that very moment, a bodiless voice spoke.
योऽयं स दृश्यते वालो वटस्तस्य तले स्थिता
That boy who is seen there is standing at the base of that banyan tree.
ततो गजाह्वयात्तूर्णं समानीय धनं बहु
Then, quickly bringing much wealth from Gajāhvaya—
ततो विलोक्य तान्देवान्हर्षेण महतान्वितः ॥ ६.५९.
Seeing those gods, he was filled with great joy.
कैलासशिखराकारं भास्करार्थे महामुनिः
The great sage, for the sake of the Sun, made a palace resembling the peak of Kailāsa.
प्रासादं नाकरोत्तत्र लिंगं यावन्न चालयेत्
He did not construct the temple there until the liṅga was installed.
दत्त्वा वृत्तिं च संहृष्टो ब्राह्मणेभ्यो निवेद्य च
Having given provisions, and joyfully informing the brāhmaṇas—
इति श्रीस्कान्दे महापुराण एकाशीतिसाहस्र्यां संहितायां षष्ठे नागरखण्डे हाटकेश्वरक्षेत्रमाहात्म्ये विदुरकृतदेवप्रासादवृत्तान्त वर्णनंनामैकोनषष्टितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, in the section of eighty-one thousand verses, in the sixth book, the Nāgara-khaṇḍa, in the glory of the Hāṭakeśvara field, the fifty-ninth chapter named 'The Account of the Temple Built by Vidura for the Deity' is concluded.
केन संस्थापिता तत्र वद सर्वमशेषतः
By whom was it established there? Tell me everything in full.
आथर्वणेन मन्त्रेण स्वयं च परमेश्वरी
By the Atharvan mantra, and by the Supreme Goddess herself.
ततः संशोषितस्तेन स समुद्रो महात्मना
Then, by that great soul, the ocean was dried up.
माहित्थं साधितं यस्मात्त्वया मे सकलं शुभम्
Because you have accomplished all this auspiciousness for me,
चमत्कारपुरक्षेत्रे पूजां प्राप्स्यस्यनुत्तमाम्
In the wondrous land of Camatkāra, you shall receive the highest worship.
पूजयिष्यति वृद्धिं च सर्वकालमवाप्स्यति
He who worships will always attain increase and prosperity.
द्विजानां रक्षणार्थाय नित्यं संनिहिता भव
Be ever present for the protection of the twice-born.
ययाऽयं चलितः शैलः स्वशक्त्या निश्चलीकृतः षष्ठ्यां तं सूर्यवारेण दृष्ट्वा पापात्प्रमुच्यते
By whose power this mountain was moved and then made steady—on the sixth day, seeing it on a Sunday, one is freed from sin.
न शत्रूणां पराभूतिं प्रयास्यति यथार्जुनः ६.६०.
He will not suffer defeat at the hands of enemies, just as Arjuna did not.
तथा गोवर्धनधरं तत्र देवं जनार्दनम् तस्य गावः प्रभूताः स्युर्नीरोगा द्विसत्तमाः
Likewise, the god Janārdana, the lifter of Govardhana, is there; his cows will be abundant and free from disease, O best of twice-born.
नरसिंहवपुः साक्षात्तथा देवो हरिः स्वयम् सर्वविघ्नहरश्चैव स्थापितश्चार्जुनेन हि
The god Hari himself, in the form of Narasiṃha, the remover of all obstacles, was also established there by Arjuna.
यस्तं पूजयते भक्त्या चतुर्थ्यां मोदकाशनैः तत्र स्थितो द्विजेंद्राणां हिताय द्विजसत्तमाः
Whoever worships him with devotion on the fourth day, offering modaka sweets, he remains there for the welfare of the best of Brāhmaṇas, O best of twice-born.
