There, I saw a beautiful place adorned with clusters of lotuses.
Then, reaching that spot, I bathed in the cold water.
Then my wife said to me, 'Take some lotuses from the pond, lord.'
So I gathered the lotuses, O best of twice-born.
Arriving at the city of Camatkāra, O best of twice-born, I then—
No man would accept those lotuses from me.
Then, as I was exhausted, my throat parched with hunger, the sun—
Having become dispassionate, I lay down to sleep in a ruined house, placing those lotuses on the ground beside my wife.
Then, when midnight arrived, I heard the sound of singing.
From that I thought, 'If some man would take these lotuses of mine—'
Thus resolving, I quickly took up the lotuses.
Then I entered that temple, O foremost of sages, where the best of twice-born stood at the front, intent on chanting and singing.
Some were dancing, others singing, and others engaged in recitation.
Then I asked someone, 'Why is this vigil being observed here?'
He replied, 'This is the vigil for the god Mahākāla.'
Today is the auspicious date called Vaishakhi, the supreme giver of merit; one certainly attains happiness from the god Mahākāla.
Give me the lotuses, taking the price, O fortunate one.
Then, O best of Brahmins, this was firmly resolved in my mind.
I have not performed any virtuous deed in any other birth.
My wife, who speaks sweetly, is suffering from hunger and thirst.
While I was thinking thus, she, my beloved, then—
Do not, O Lord, sell the lotuses out of greed for wealth.
Fasting arose by force, due to the absence of crops, without doubt.
There, both of us bathed during the day in the beautiful lake.
Therefore, let us now worship the great god Mahākāla.
With those lotuses, taking up devotion, we performed worship, O best of Brahmins.
Afflicted by hunger, sleep did not come to me at all.
Then, at the time of dawn, when the sun's disk had risen—
She, my beloved, then took up that body for me.
By the power of that, I became the lord of Kāntī, a king.
