Then, when mortals bathe in that auspicious Sarasvatī lake,
Then, frightened, the thousand-eyed one went to the god, the Grandfather.
By your grace, people, having seen, go to heaven; there, men who bathe in the Sarasvatā go to the highest realm.
Even those of sinful conduct, excluded from all duties,
The knowledge of good and evil belongs to all embodied beings.
Therefore, O god, either abandon me or that supreme sacred place.
Hearing those words of Yama, the Grandfather—
Then Śakra went to the lake and filled it with earth.
Even today, a man who is properly established at this place—
There, Maṅkaṇaka also, together with the god Śambhu,
The liṅga placed by Maṅkaṇaka is there, of great glory.
Whoever worships it on the fourteenth day of the bright half of Māgha—
There is a place, well-known, that destroys all sins.
Whoever worships it with devotion, at the time of Hari's sleeping or waking—
Of the days called 'unsleeping beds,' the second is especially dear.
Whoever worships there, on that day, the god who lies in the waters—
Tell in detail, by whom and by what method all that is to be worshipped.
He is unconquerable by all the gods, gandharvas, serpents, and demons.
Then, having brought the entire earth under his control, that mighty one—
There arose a great battle there, destructive to both gods and demons.
For ten thousand years, day after day, that fierce conflict continued.
Then, when the tenth millennium had come to its end—
At that time, abandoning heaven, together with all the hosts of gods—
They went to where the Blessed Lord Viṣṇu lay, overcome by yogic sleep.
There, with hymns born of the Vedas, they offered praise in every direction.
Then the Lord of the Universe arose and spoke to the destroyer of Bala: 'You, together with the hosts of gods, have come here of your own accord.'
'Though I am unconquerable in battle, O god, yet I have been defeated in war by them.'
'Now, O slayer of Madhu, existence has been established in heaven.'
Therefore, O Śakra, undertake great austerity for as long as is required.
By that power of ascetic energy, O Vāsava, strength will arise in you.
