Whatever meritorious act is accomplished elsewhere in a year—
Therefore, go there quickly, O king, and perform austerities.
Hearing those words, the king, son of Nahuṣa—
Then, having established that liṅga of the god of gods, the wielder of the trident—
Then, by its power, the king, together with his two wives—
Was praised by Kinnaras singing and by Cāraṇas extolling him.
Thus ends the forty-first chapter, called 'The Greatness of Yayātīśvara,' in the section on the Glory of the Hāṭakeśvara Field, in the sixth book, in the eighty-one-thousand-verse Mahāpurāṇa, Śrī Skānda.
Bestower of liberation upon all beings, and destroyer of all sins.
How was she established there, O Sūta, and what is her power?
Long ago, a great concern arose regarding the undertaking of pilgrimages.
All the gods indeed have sacred fords upon the earth.
Where, at the three times of day, one performs acts arising from the sandhyā rites.
And whatever other righteous act there may be, bringing benefit.
There is, in heaven, no authority for the performance of rites here.
Therefore, wherever this stone will fall upon the surface of the earth—
Having thus spoken, that broad stone, born from the mountain, fell.
Then that stone, composed of all gems, fell to the ground.
Then the Lord of the world himself came to the earth.
There, in that most sacred place, seeing her present—
Because, without water, no rite can proceed—
Then he considered his own daughter, Sarasvatī.
Then, piercing the earth, the great river appeared.
Even in the three sandhyās, with your waters, I shall perform the rites.
Likewise, those men who will bathe in your waters—
Frightened by the fear of contact with people, I do not come to the earth.
By your command alone, and in no other way, should anything ever be done by me.
That place is inaccessible to all mortals; there, you are worthy to remain.
Having spoken thus, the lord of the gods dug out a great lake.
Then the Grandsire commanded the serpents endowed with poisonous sight.
So that mortals may never touch the Sarasvatī in any way.
