ख्यातः कुवलयाश्वेति धंधुमारस्तथैव सः
He became known as Kuvalayāśva, and likewise as Dhundhumāra.
तेन धुन्धुर्महादैत्यो निहतो मरुजांगले
By him, the great demon Dhundhu was slain in the Maru-jāngala.
चमत्कारपुरं क्षेत्रं स गत्वा पावनं महत्
He went to the great and holy field of Camatkārapura.
संस्थाप्य सुमहल्लिंगं प्रासादे रत्नमंडिते
There, he established a great linga in a temple adorned with jewels.
ततस्तस्य महादेवः स्वयमेव महेश्वरः ६.३८.
Then, Mahadeva himself, the great lord, appeared there.
उवाच वरदोऽस्मीति प्रार्थयस्व यथेप्सितम्
He said, 'I am the granter of boons; ask for whatever you desire.'
संनिधानं प्रकर्तव्यं लिंगेऽस्मिन्वृषभध्वज
'O Bull-bannered One, a permanent presence must be established in this linga.'
अहं सदा करिष्यामि गौर्या सार्धं न संशयः
'I shall always do so, together with Gauri—of this there is no doubt.'
तत्र वाप्यां नरः स्नात्वा यो मां संपूजयिष्यति
There, in that pond, whoever bathes and worships me—
सोऽपि राजा प्रहृष्टा त्मा स्थितस्तत्रैव मुक्तिभाक्
That man too, with a delighted heart, remains there itself, attaining liberation, like a king.
इति श्रीस्कांदे महापुराण एकाशीतिसाहस्र्यां संहितायां षष्ठे नागरखण्डे हाटकेश्वरक्षेत्रमाहात्म्ये धुन्धुमारेश्वरमाहात्म्यवर्णनंनामाष्टात्रिंशो अध्यायः
Thus ends the thirty-eighth chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of Dhundhumāreśvara,' in the section on the greatness of the Hāṭakeśvara field, in the sixth book, Nāgarakhaṇḍa, of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, comprising eighty-one thousand verses.
ययातिना नरेंद्रेण स्थापितं लिंगमुत्तमम्
The supreme liṅga was established by King Yayāti.
देवयान्या तथान्यच्च तथा शर्मिष्ठया द्विजाः
Another was likewise established by Devayānī, and another by Śarmiṣṭhā, O twice-born ones.
स यदा सर्वभोगानां तृप्तिं प्राप्तो द्विजोत्तमाः
When he, O best of Brāhmaṇas, attained satisfaction in all enjoyments—
जरामादाय तद्गात्राद्भार्याभ्यां सहितस्तदा
Then, taking on old age in his body, he was together with his two wives.
भगवन्सर्वतीर्थानां क्षेत्राणां च वदस्व मे
"O Lord, tell me of all the holy waters and sacred fields."
श्रीमार्कंडेय उवाच क्षेत्राणामिह सर्वेषां तीर्थैः सर्वैरलंकृतम्
Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Among all the sacred fields here, each is adorned with holy waters."
यत्र विष्णुपदी गंगा जंतूनां पापनाशिनी
There, where the Gaṅgā called Viṣṇupadī flows, destroyer of sins for living beings—
तथान्यानि च तीर्थानि यानि संति धरातले
And likewise, whatever other sacred waters exist on the earth—
शिला यत्र द्विपञ्चाशद्धस्तानां परिसंख्यया
Where there is a stone measuring fifty-two cubits in count—
यदन्यत्र शुभं कर्म वर्षेणैकेन सिध्यति ६.३९.
Whatever meritorious act is accomplished elsewhere in a year—
तस्मात्तत्र द्रुतं गत्वा तपः कुरु महीपते
Therefore, go there quickly, O king, and perform austerities.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स राजा नहुषात्मजः
Hearing those words, the king, son of Nahuṣa—
ततः संस्थाप्य तल्लिंगं देवदेवस्य शूलिनः
Then, having established that liṅga of the god of gods, the wielder of the trident—
ततस्तस्य प्रभावेन भार्याभ्यां सहितो नृपः
Then, by its power, the king, together with his two wives—
किन्नरैर्गीयमानश्च स्तूयमानश्च चारणैः
Was praised by Kinnaras singing and by Cāraṇas extolling him.
इति श्रीस्कांदे महापुराण एकाशीतिसाहस्र्यां संहितायां षष्ठे नागरखण्डे हाटकेश्वरक्षेत्रमाहात्म्ये ययातीश्वरमाहात्म्यवर्णनंनामैकोनचत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the forty-first chapter, called 'The Greatness of Yayātīśvara,' in the section on the Glory of the Hāṭakeśvara Field, in the sixth book, in the eighty-one-thousand-verse Mahāpurāṇa, Śrī Skānda.
मोक्षदा सर्वजंतूनां तथा पातकनाशिनी
Bestower of liberation upon all beings, and destroyer of all sins.
सा कथं स्थापिता तत्र किंप्रभावा च सूतज
How was she established there, O Sūta, and what is her power?
पुराऽभून्महती चिन्ता तीर्थयात्रासमुद्भवा
