By offerings to maidens and by oblation, it becomes fruitful.
This is the supreme method of mantra-accomplishment spoken for the Krita age.
This is the method of mantra-accomplishment taught for the Treta age, lacking one quarter.
Thus, having attained perfection arising from the mantra there—
Endowed with the power of blessing and cursing, and possessed of radiance—
Then, the sage arrived at the seat of Chitreśvara.
There, he accomplished all the mantras in their proper order.
Thus, having perfected the mantra, he went to the city of marvels.
Then he saw a gathering of Brahmins, resembling a cluster of gods; some there were versed in the Vedas, intent on expounding them.
Others were skilled in the science of sacrifice, devoted to narrating sacrificial rites.
Others, O tiger among Brahmins, were expert in the limbs of the Vedas.
Still others were devoted to Vedic study, reciting everything with a resonant tone.
Others, filled with curiosity, wandered about in various ways among themselves.
Some were devoted to discourses on tradition, and others were reciters of the scriptures.
In the same way, other excellent Brahmins recite the Purāṇa.
Then, seeing those Brahmins of firm vows,
A thought arose in my mind regarding the temple of Śambhu.
For you, I shall build the supreme temple of Śambhu, the god of gods.
Though he spoke thus, he remained alert and persistent again and again.
Then, filled with anger, the sage addressed those foremost Brahmins.
This, indeed, is the restraint of the virtuous for those intoxicated by pride.
Among you, those who are established in pride,
The ancestors, too, always devoid of affection, along with their sons,
Having spoken thus, that best of Brahmins then withdrew.
Then, among them, there was a Brahmin, the eldest and most wise.
Seeing that sage, angry and insulted, departing,
He approached the sage who had gone far, and, bowing, addressed him.
These, though accomplished in study, did not heed your words.
Therefore, I have given land for your construction of Śambhu’s temple.
Hearing these words, Durvāsas, filled with joy, built the temple thereafter, acting according to his statement.
