No one but Agastya is able to restrain this Vindhya,
Then, the radiant one assumed the form of a brahmin,
Thereafter, at the Vaiśvadeva time, he devoted himself to reciting the Vedas,
Then Agastya, delighted, said: 'Welcome to you, great sage!'
O best of sages, tell me the truth—what is it that you desire me to grant you?
Considering you alone as capable of all tasks in the three worlds,
Formerly, for the sake of the gods, you drank up the ocean of milk.
Therefore, O excellent sage, you are now our refuge.
After offering arghya to the Sun, he then spoke respectfully.
I am blessed and favored that you have come to my house.
O best of sages, out of rivalry with the chief of mountains, Sumeru,
By various means, beginning with conciliation, restrain him.
Agastya said: I will restrain for you the growing mountain.
Then, at your bidding, the Sun with his fierce rays did not proceed.
Agastya too, going swiftly, spoke respectfully to Vindhya.
Now my mind is set on bathing at the southern holy places.
Hearing his words, Vindhya, the best of mountains,
And Agastya, having reached its southern end, O twice-born,
He, the best of mountains, promised thus, being afraid of a curse.
Yet, even so, by that very path, he does not turn back.
Then, right there, the lordly sage brought Lopamudra.
By your words, O radiant one, I have left my own hermitage.
Therefore, according to my instruction, O Bhānu, on the fourteenth day in the bright half of the month of Madhu,
I shall worship that liṅga myself at the end of the year.
Whoever else, on that day, worships the liṅga, whether human,
On the fourteenth day of the bright half of Caitra, he always attains proximity.
All this I have told you, as you have asked me, O best of twice-born.
Once, for the sake of the gods, you drank the ocean of milk.
O wise Sūta, tell us the truth of this in detail.
From that arose beings who destroyed the vigor and enthusiasm of all the gods.
