Shame, shame upon the conduct of those of sinful ways, whose nature is that of fallen Kṣatriyas.
Therefore, depart quickly before any Brahmin is harmed.
Because of this astonishing event, he became extremely embarrassed.
The king began to reflect, remembering that situation of his father.
Then, after sending all his ministers back to their homes,
He learned that in that city there was a Brahmin of renowned vows,
Named Devaśarman, who was affectionate to those who sought his refuge.
Then, rising early in the morning, he assumed the form of an outcaste.
Now, whoever performs the act of cleaning excrement there,
How have you come here, you who act contrary to my way of life?
Even as he spoke thus, the king was swiftly seized by force.
Then, at the end of the year, O best of Brahmins, by a Caṇḍāla...
In your lineage, O master, you have thus performed the work of cleaning filth.
Then, having heard those words, the best of the twice-born spoke: 'Your authority is your own, and your duty should be as before.'
Then, when another day arrived, that outcaste, filled with anger—
Seeing him with weapon raised in hand, resolved to strike—
Then, as his eye was struck out, at that very moment, O twice-born—
Hearing that the outcaste, his own servant, had been slain by him—
Then, together with his sons, grandsons, and other relatives—
He too, being beaten, was battered by blows—
Then all of them, led by Devaśarman, were astonished—
And they asked: 'What is this act, suited to outcastes? Are you some best of Brāhmaṇas fallen by a curse?'
By which you do such a deed, condemned even among outcastes? You are known as Viṣṇusena, born of the Haihaya lineage.
I have come to this place for the sake of worship—
With hands joined in reverence, he addressed the king.
There is nothing unattained by me, nor anything impossible, O king.
Whoever performs the śrāddha here at the Nāga lake attains liberation.
Therefore, for the sake of delivering him, perform the act on behalf of the Brāhmaṇa.
Devaśarman said: 'So be it, O best of kings; I myself will perform the śrāddha for your father.'
They said: 'This śrāddha, performed by you, is not proper to be accepted; it is condemned.'
