Then Śrīvardhana spoke, bowing to his own teacher.
Whether from ignorance or knowledge, whatever words I have spoken—
Not even in freedom have I spoken a false word to my teacher.
Afterwards, the sun rises and the great ocean is dried up.
Then the teacher spoke again to the disciple with gentle words.
A disciple, even if advanced in age, must always be carefully instructed; how much more so you, who are still a child—therefore I speak to you repeatedly.
No one destroys the dharma accumulated by the sages of old.
Therefore, ascetics must conduct themselves with patience at the forefront.
One should not return evil for evil—this is the eternal principle.
One who is burned burns again; one who is killed kills in return.
What virtue is there in being good to those who do good to you?
Having spoken thus, he then said this to his disciple:
O serpent, my words to my disciple will not turn out otherwise.
Show mercy to the wretched one, who is ignorant of the curse.
O fortunate one, the measure of his righteousness cannot be reckoned.
Even one who causes an obstacle for a moment during a great festival—
One should recite with faith the six-syllable Śaiva mantra.
By it, the sin accumulated in ten days, or that arising in twenty years, is destroyed.
Therefore, you, standing in the midst of water, should respectfully recite that mantra.
When, while you are standing in the water, a brāhmaṇa named Vatson, in anger—
Therefore, go quickly, O serpent, from this place to the water-reservoir.
Then, afflicted by suffering, I arrived here at the water-reservoir.
By your grace, O best of Brahmins, I have been freed from the state of a serpent.
There is no doubt, Vatson is the one you have mentioned as mine.
Then I spoke properly to that serpent who had assumed a divine form.
By whom does suffering not arise, born from the loss of a beloved?
Then that supreme person, eager, spoke to me again.
But this cannot be spoken while the celestial chariot is present.
The Shaiva six-syllabled mantra removes inauspiciousness for people.
Then, without doubt, you will obtain whatever you desire in your heart.
