नायमत्यंतसंवासः कस्यचित्केनचित्सह
No one has eternal companionship with anyone.
मृतं वा यदि वा नष्टं योतीतमनुशोचति
Whether someone has died or is lost, those who remain grieve for them.
एवं संबोधयित्वा मां गृहीत्वा ते मुहुर्जनैः
Thus, after consoling me, you repeatedly brought me among people.
ततो मम गृहस्थस्य स्मरमाणस्य तां प्रियाम्
Then, as a householder, remembering my beloved,
ततः कोपपरीतेन प्रतिज्ञातं मया स्फुटम्
Filled with anger, I made a clear vow.
अद्यप्रभृति चेन्नाहं सर्पं दृष्टिवशं गतम् ६.२९.
From this day onward, if I do not see a snake under my control,
यच्च निक्षेपहर्तॄणां यच्च विश्वासघातिनाम्
The sin incurred by those who steal deposits, and by betrayers of trust,
यत्पापं साधुनिंदायां मातापितृवधे च यत्
The sin of reviling the virtuous, and of killing one's mother or father,
परदाररतानां च यत्पापं जीवघातिनाम्
The sin of those who delight in another's wife, and of those who kill living beings,
उक्तौ चाभिरतानां च यत्पापं गरदायिनाम्
The sin of those who utter poison, and of those who give poison,
कृतघ्नानां च यत्पापं परवित्तापहारिणाम्
The sin of the ungrateful, and of those who steal another's wealth,
यत्पापं शस्त्रकर्तृणां तथा वह्निप्रदायिनाम्
The sin of those who wield weapons, and likewise of those who set fires,
व्रतभंगेन यत्पापं व्रतिनां निंदयापि यत्
The sin incurred by breaking vows, and by reviling those who observe vows,
यत्पापं भ्रूणहत्यायां मृष्टमांसाशिनां च यत्
The sin of killing a fetus, and of those who eat well-cooked meat,
वृक्षच्छेद प्रसक्तानां यत्पापं शल्यकारिणाम्
The sin of those addicted to cutting trees, and of those who cause wounds,
पाखंडिनां च यत्पापं नास्तिकानां च यद्भवेत् ६.२९.
The sin of impostors, and whatever sin may belong to atheists,
मांसमद्यप्रसक्तानां यत्पापं विटभोजिनाम्
The sin of those addicted to meat and alcohol, and of those who eat excrement,
मृषावादप्रसक्तानां पररंध्रावलोकिनाम्
The sin of those addicted to false speech, and of those who gaze at another's secret places.
यत्पापं साक्ष्यकर्तृणां धान्यसंग्रहकारिणाम्
The sin incurred by those who bear false witness and by those who hoard grain—
आखेटकरतानां च यत्पापं पाशदायिनाम्
The sin of those engaged in hunting and of those who set traps—
नित्यं प्रेषणकर्तॄणां यत्पापं मधुजीविनाम्
The sin of those who constantly send others on errands and of those who live by selling honey—
अदृष्टदेववक्त्राणां यत्पापं मत्स्यजीविनाम्
The sin of those who have never seen the face of a deity and of those who make their living by fishing—
विवादे पृच्छमानानां पक्षपातेन जल्पताम्
Of those who, when questioned in disputes, speak with partiality—
यत्पापं तु भवेत्तेषां निर्दयानां दुरात्मनाम्
The sin that arises for those cruel and wicked-hearted ones—
कन्याविक्रयकर्तृणां यत्पापं पापसंगिनाम्
The sin of those who sell maidens and of those who associate with the sinful—
विद्याविक्रयकर्तॄणां यत्पापं समुदाहृतम् ६.२९.
The sin declared for those who sell knowledge—
एवं मया प्रतिज्ञाय कोपाविष्टेन सूतज
Thus, having vowed in anger, O son of Suta—
ततःप्रभृत्यहं भूमौ भ्रमामि लगुडायुधः
From that time onward, I have wandered the earth, armed with a club—
मया कोपपरीतेन बहवः पन्नगा हताः
Many serpents have been slain by me, overcome with wrath—
एकदाहं वनं प्राप्तो गहनं लगुडायुधः
Once, I entered a dense forest, armed with a club—
