Whatever I saw as I wandered in the great forest—
O elephant, if you have seen her whose thighs are like pestles and whose lips resemble bimba fruit, O jackal—
Or perhaps, O bilva tree, speak, if your fruits are like her breasts.
Her limbs are like your blossoms—she, the noble-minded one, is my wife.
O madhūka tree, with your flowers, both her cheeks are equally beautiful.
O plantain stalk, clearly, my beloved's thighs are as soft as yours.
O deer, my wife has not been seen by you here in this forest.
Always, in front of my beloved, you display your body, adorned with beauty.
This swan that is seen here remembers his mate, the female swan.
This one bird, the cakravāka, is truly fortunate.
This sound that is heard stirs up longing within me.
Seeing me, this stag goes, and the doe follows after him.
This elephant follows his beloved, his dear mate, out of affection.
Alas, my dear one, with eyes like a fawn, shining like molten gold!
Where is that devotion, where is that love, where is that contentment, where is that compassion?
As I was lamenting in this way, my friends arrived.
Then, with eyes red with anger, they spoke to me, O son of Sūta.
Why do you grieve, foolish one? For the life of men is not to be mourned.
You, we, and others as well—living beings have arisen on this earth.
Through separation, the beloved was gained, and again has gone into absence.
No one has eternal companionship with anyone.
Whether someone has died or is lost, those who remain grieve for them.
Thus, after consoling me, you repeatedly brought me among people.
Then, as a householder, remembering my beloved,
Filled with anger, I made a clear vow.
From this day onward, if I do not see a snake under my control,
The sin incurred by those who steal deposits, and by betrayers of trust,
The sin of reviling the virtuous, and of killing one's mother or father,
The sin of those who delight in another's wife, and of those who kill living beings,
The sin of those who utter poison, and of those who give poison,
