बुरुडेन च कैवर्तः कैवर्तेन च मेदकः प्रजायन्ते सुरश्रेष्ठ सवकर्मसु गर्हिताः
From a buruḍa comes a Kaivarta, and from a Kaivarta, a Medaka; O best of gods, these are born, all engaged in condemned occupations.
तथा शूद्रेण संजज्ञे ब्राह्मण्यां सुरसत्तम
So too, O best of gods, one is born from a Shudra father and Brahmin mother.
एतौ द्वावपि शूद्रेण भवतो द्विजसंभवे
Both these are born from a Shudra father and twice-born mother.
एतत्त्रेतायुगे प्रोक्तं मया ते सुरसत्तम
This, O best of gods, I have declared to you as it was in the Treta age.
लक्षाष्टकप्रमाणेन तद्युगं परिकीर्तितम् कपिशो जायते तत्र भगवान्गरुडध्वजः
That age is said to last eight hundred thousand years; there, the Lord Garuḍa-bannered is born tawny in color.
द्वौ पादौ चैव धर्मस्य द्वौ पापस्य व्यवस्थितौ
In that age, two parts of Dharma and two parts of Adharma are established.
ततोऽन्यैः समतिक्रांतैर्वार्धक्यं पञ्चभिः शतैः
Afterwards, when these are exceeded by others, old age comes in five hundred years.
नार्यश्चापि सुरश्रेष्ठ तत्स्व रूपाः प्रकीर्तिताः
And, O best of gods, the women there are described as possessing their own forms.
नातिरूपेण संयुक्ता न च रूपविवर्जिताः
They are neither excessively endowed with beauty nor entirely devoid of it.
नातिपुष्पफलैर्युक्ता वृक्षाश्चापिसुरेश्वर ६.२७.
O Lord of the gods, the trees are neither laden with too many flowers and fruits nor lacking them.
वर्षंति जलदाः कामं भवन्त्योषधयोऽखिलाः तत्तत्र समभावेन न सत्यं नैव चानृतम्
The clouds rain as they wish, and all the herbs exist; there, everything is balanced—neither truth nor untruth prevails.
तीर्थानां च मखानां च द्वापरे सुरसत्तम
O best of the gods, in the Dvapara age, the holy places and sacrifices—
एतत्तव समाख्यातं युगं द्वापरसंज्ञकम्
This age called Dvapara has been described to you.
शृणुष्वावहितो भूत्वा वदतो मम सांप्रतम्
Now listen attentively as I speak further.
द्वात्रिंशच्च सहस्राणि वर्षाणां कथितं विभो
O mighty one, thirty-two thousand years have been declared for it.
तत्रैकपादयुक्तश्च धर्मः पापं त्रिभिः स्मृतम्
In that age, righteousness stands on one foot, and sin is said to be present in three.
न शृण्वंति पितुः पुत्रा न स्नुषा भ्रातरो न च
Sons do not listen to their father, nor do daughters-in-law or brothers.
यत्र षोडशमे वर्षे नराः पलित यौवनाः
Where, in the sixteenth year, men become gray-haired in their youth.
आयुः परं मनुष्याणां शतसंख्यं सुरेश्वर
O Lord of the gods, the maximum lifespan of humans is counted as one hundred years.
द्वात्रिंशद्धयमुख्यानां चतुर्विंशतिः खरोष्ट्रयोः ६.२७.
For thirty-two chief horses and twenty-four camels and donkeys.
चतुष्पदानामन्येषां विंशतिः पंचभिर्युता
For other quadrupeds, twenty plus five years are given.
तथा पापपरा लोका दुःस्थिताश्च विशेषतः सेवितास्तेऽपि गृध्राद्यैर्यत्र च्छायाविवर्जिताः
Likewise, people devoted to sin are especially unstable; even vultures and others frequent them, where there is no shade.
यत्र धर्मो ह्यधर्मेण पीड्यते सुरसत्तम
O best of the gods, where righteousness is oppressed by unrighteousness.
गुरवश्च तथा शिष्यैः स्त्रीभिश्च पुरुषाधमाः
Where teachers are treated by their students, and women by base men.
यत्र सीदंति धर्मिष्ठा नराः सत्यपरायणाः
Where the righteous, devoted to truth, suffer.
आधयो व्याधयश्चैव तथा पीडा महाद्भुता
Afflictions, diseases, and great suffering also arise.
अल्पायुषस्तथा मर्त्या जायंते वर्णसंकरात्
Mortals of short lifespan are born from the mingling of castes.
न वर्षति घनः काले संप्राप्तेऽपि यथोचिते
The cloud does not rain even when the proper season arrives.
न च क्षीरप्रदा गावो यद्यपि स्युः सुपोषिताः
Cows do not give milk, even if they are well-nourished.
लोका भवंति निःश्रीकास्तथा ये च मलिम्लुचाः ६.२७.
People become destitute of prosperity, as do those who are impure.
