सोऽपि साक्षाजगन्नाथः श्वेतद्वीपाश्रयाश्रितः
In that age too, the Lord of the universe, residing in Shvetadvipa, is present.
त्रिपादस्तत्र धर्मः स्यात्पादेनैकेन पातकम्
There, righteousness stands on three feet, and with one foot, unrighteousness exists.
ततः फलानि वांछंति तीर्थयात्रोद्भवानि ते
Then, people desire the fruits that arise from pilgrimages to holy places.
ततः कामवशान्मोहं सर्वे गच्छंति मानवाः
Thereafter, all humans fall under the sway of desire and delusion.
ततस्तु रौरवादीनि नरकाणि यमः स्वयम्
Then, Yama himself sends people to hells such as Raurava.
कर्मानुसारतस्तानि सेवयंति नराधमाः
According to their deeds, the lowest of men experience those places.
त्रिविधाः पुरुषास्तत्र श्रेष्ठाश्चाधममध्यमाः
There, men are of three kinds: superior, middling, and inferior.
उन्नतास्तालमात्रेण तेजोवीर्यसमन्विताः
The exalted ones are as tall as palm trees, endowed with energy and vigor.
उप्तक्षेत्रं सकृच्चापि सप्तवारं लुनंति ते
They plough a sown field even seven times in a single season.
यथर्तु पत्रसंयुक्तास्तत्र स्युः सुमनोहराः ६.२७.
There, as the seasons change, the trees are adorned with beautiful leaves.
इतरेतरसंस्पर्धैः क्रियमाणा नृपोत्तमैः
Through mutual rivalry, these are undertaken by the foremost of kings.
तीर्थयात्रां व्रतं दानं नियमं संयमं तथा
Pilgrimages, vows, charity, discipline, and self-restraint as well.
सहस्रेण तु वर्षाणां तत्र स्याद्यौवनं नृणाम्
There, for a thousand years, youthfulness exists among men.
रजकश्चर्मकारश्च नटो बुरुड एव च
A washerman, a leather-worker, an actor, and also a buruḍa arise.
संभवंति युगे तस्मिन्यो निसंसर्गतो विभो
In that age, O mighty one, they are born through improper unions.
यथावद्वद कार्त्स्न्येन अत्र कौतूहलं महत्
Tell me thoroughly and properly here, for there is great curiosity.
योनि दोषात्सुरश्रेष्ठ जातेर्वक्ष्याम्यहं स्फुटम्
Due to the fault of the womb, O best of gods, I will clearly explain the origin.
ब्राह्मण्यां क्षत्रियाज्जातः सूत इत्यभिधीयते
One born from a Kshatriya father and Brahmin mother is called a Sūta.
चर्मकारेण संजज्ञे नटश्चांत्यजसंज्ञकः
From a leather-worker is born an actor, known as one of the lowest class.
तथा च मागधो जज्ञे वैश्येन द्विजसंभवे ६.२७.
Likewise, a Māgadha is born from a Vaishya father and twice-born mother.
बुरुडेन च कैवर्तः कैवर्तेन च मेदकः प्रजायन्ते सुरश्रेष्ठ सवकर्मसु गर्हिताः
From a buruḍa comes a Kaivarta, and from a Kaivarta, a Medaka; O best of gods, these are born, all engaged in condemned occupations.
तथा शूद्रेण संजज्ञे ब्राह्मण्यां सुरसत्तम
So too, O best of gods, one is born from a Shudra father and Brahmin mother.
एतौ द्वावपि शूद्रेण भवतो द्विजसंभवे
Both these are born from a Shudra father and twice-born mother.
एतत्त्रेतायुगे प्रोक्तं मया ते सुरसत्तम
This, O best of gods, I have declared to you as it was in the Treta age.
लक्षाष्टकप्रमाणेन तद्युगं परिकीर्तितम् कपिशो जायते तत्र भगवान्गरुडध्वजः
That age is said to last eight hundred thousand years; there, the Lord Garuḍa-bannered is born tawny in color.
द्वौ पादौ चैव धर्मस्य द्वौ पापस्य व्यवस्थितौ
In that age, two parts of Dharma and two parts of Adharma are established.
ततोऽन्यैः समतिक्रांतैर्वार्धक्यं पञ्चभिः शतैः
Afterwards, when these are exceeded by others, old age comes in five hundred years.
नार्यश्चापि सुरश्रेष्ठ तत्स्व रूपाः प्रकीर्तिताः
And, O best of gods, the women there are described as possessing their own forms.
नातिरूपेण संयुक्ता न च रूपविवर्जिताः
They are neither excessively endowed with beauty nor entirely devoid of it.
नातिपुष्पफलैर्युक्ता वृक्षाश्चापिसुरेश्वर ६.२७.
O Lord of the gods, the trees are neither laden with too many flowers and fruits nor lacking them.
