तेन सर्वमिदं व्याप्तं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ब्रह्मलोकमनुप्राप्तो देवैः सर्वैः समन्वितः
By him, all this—three worlds, moving and unmoving—was pervaded; he reached the world of Brahmā, accompanied by all the gods.
तेन दैत्येन सर्वेऽपि त्रासिताः सुरमानवाः
By that demon, all the gods and humans were terrified.
वसवो मरुतः साध्या विश्वेदेवाः सुरर्षयः
The Vasus, Maruts, Sādhyas, Viśvadevas, and divine sages—
यज्ञभागान्स्वयं सर्वे बुभुजुस्ते च दानवाः
All those demons themselves consumed the shares of the sacrifices.
अद्यापि देवताखातं त्रैलोक्ये ख्यातिमागतम्
Even today, the fame of that which was taken from the gods is known throughout the three worlds.
अव्यक्ताः परमत्रासाद्ध्यायंतस्ते च संस्थिताः
Because of intense fear, they became invisible and remained there.
एकाहारा निराहारा वायुभक्षास्तथा परे 7.3.22.
Some subsisted on one meal, some fasted, and others lived on air alone.
कृच्छ्रसांतपने निष्ठा महापाराकिणः परे
Others practiced severe austerities, enduring great hardships.
जपहोमपराश्चान्ये ध्यानासक्तास्तथा परे
Some devoted themselves to recitation and offering, while others were absorbed in meditation.
पूजयंतः परां शक्तिं देवीं स्वकार्यहेतवे विमुक्तिरभवद्राजन्सर्वेषां कर्मबन्धनात्
Worshipping the supreme power, the goddess, for the sake of their own purpose, O King, they all attained liberation from the bondage of actions.
ततः पूर्णे सहस्रांते वर्षाणां नृपसत्तम
Then, O best of kings, when a full thousand years had passed,
पूर्वं जाता महाराज धूममूर्तिर्भयावहा दृष्ट्वा तां तुष्टुवुर्देवाः कृतांजलिपुटास्ततः
Previously, O great king, a terrifying form made of smoke was born; seeing her, the gods, with hands joined in reverence, praised her.
नमोऽस्तु सर्वगे देवि नमस्ते सर्वपूजिते
Salutations to you, O all-pervading goddess; salutations to you, worshipped by all.
नमस्ते परमादेवि ब्रह्मयोने नमोनमः
Salutations to you, supreme goddess; repeated salutations to you, source of Brahma.
नमस्ते पद्मपत्राक्षि विश्वमातर्नमोनमः
Salutations to you, lotus-eyed one; repeated salutations to you, mother of the universe.
स्वस्वरूपस्थिते देवि त्वं च संसारलक्षणम्
O goddess, abiding in your own true form, you are also the mark of worldly existence.
त्वं वृद्धिस्त्वं गतिः कर्त्री शची लक्ष्मीश्च पार्वती 7.3.22.
You are growth, you are the path, the doer; you are Śacī, Lakṣmī, and Pārvatī.
यच्चान्यदत्र देवेशि त्रैलोक्येऽस्तीतिसंज्ञितम्
And whatever else, O goddess of the gods, exists here in the three worlds as 'existence',—
वह्निना च यथा काष्ठं तंतुना च यथा पटः
Just as wood is by fire, and cloth is by thread,
वरो मे याच्यतां शीघ्रमभीष्टः सुरसत्तमाः
Let your desired boon be asked quickly, O best of gods.
किमत्र गुप्तभावेन तिष्ठथ श्वभ्रमध्यगाः
Why do you remain here in secrecy, dwelling in the midst of the cave?
देवा ऊचुः तेन व्याप्तमिदं सर्वं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्
The gods said: By him this entire threefold world, with all that moves and does not move, is pervaded.
यज्ञभागो हृतोऽस्माकं दैत्यानां स प्रकल्पितः
Our share of the sacrifice has been taken; it has been assigned to the demons.
हत्वा दैत्यान्यथा भूयः शक्रः स्वपदमाप्नुयात्
By slaying the demons, let Śakra regain his own place again.
विशेषो नास्ति मे कश्चिदुभयोः सुरसत्तमाः
There is no particular distinction for me between the two, O best of gods.
तस्मात्तान्वारयिष्यामि शक्राद्यांस्त्रिदिवात्पुनः
Therefore, I shall restrain them and restore Śakra and the others to heaven again.
दूतं कलिंगदैत्याय त्यज त्वं त्रिदिवं द्रुतम् 7.3.22.
Messenger, go swiftly to the demon Kaliṅga and tell him: 'Leave heaven at once.'
श्रीमाता जगतां माता देवैराराधिता परा
The revered mother, the mother of the worlds, worshipped by the gods, is supreme.
स्वस्थानं गच्छ शीघ्रं त्वं शक्रो यातु त्रिविष्टपम्
Return quickly to your own place; let Indra go to heaven.
अहं लोकेश्वरो मत्वा सगर्वमिदमब्रवीत्
Thinking myself the lord of the worlds, I spoke these words with pride.
