Until his aged father, overwhelmed with longing to see his son, comes to the earth's surface, near his own hermitage—
Having spoken with him, then release him at the Agni-tīrtha.
Meanwhile, the devoted brāhmaṇa Mṛkaṇḍa—
Alas, my beloved son! Why do I not see him today?
Having made me, and his mother as well, tormented by sorrow, my son—
See, O brāhmaṇī, through my own sin, as a doer of evil—
That was explained to me earlier by that wise one, O great soul.
Now, afflicted by my son's sorrow, I shall accomplish the fire sacrifice.
Why do you delay, O Brahman? Quickly bring the wood.
So that, together with you, I may enter the sacred fire.
Then that boy, delighted, approached their presence.
Seeing him, the Brahman rejoiced, together with his wife.
Again and again, embracing him with his wife, he questioned him.
Having cast me and my wife, advanced in age, into the ocean of grief—
Gradually, with humility, remembering your words, O father, he was addressed by all the foremost twice-born: 'May you live long.'
Then, O father, the sage, standing among them, looked around.
On the third day, this boy will attain death.
Then the sages, frightened by the falsehood, O father, at that very moment—
Having bowed, I was addressed by the lotus-born: 'May you live long.' He also asked, 'From where have you come here?'
Then all those sages narrated his story.
Just as this boy, O god, by your grace, O Grandfather—
Then, O father, by Brahma I was made free from old age and death.
Those sages released me here itself, in the presence of the hermitage.
Hearing his words, Mrikanda was filled with joy.
Having bowed to all those sages, he stood with hands joined in reverence.
O best of sages, this has been rightly spoken by some teachers.
The sight of the virtuous is meritorious, for the virtuous are like sacred fords.
Therefore, you all have come today as guests to my house.
Though the boy's life is short, he is born free from death.
Today, by you all, my entire lineage has been protected and uplifted.
