ततस्तस्य नरेन्द्रस्य व्यसनं सैन्यसंभवम्
Then, the calamity of that king, arising from his army.
अथ ते तापसाः सर्वे स च राजा ससेवकः
Then all those ascetics, and the king with his attendants.
ततस्तेषां प्रसुप्तानां सर्वेषां तत्र कानने
Then, while all of them slept there in the forest.
ततः स प्रातरुत्थाय कृतपूर्वाह्णिकक्रियः
Then, rising in the morning, having performed the early rituals.
निजैस्तैः सेवकैः सार्धं प्रस्थितः स्वपुरीं प्रति
He set out for his own city, together with his attendants.
ततो निजगृहं प्राप्य कञ्चि त्कालं महीपतिः
Then, having reached his own house, the king remained for some time.
तच्च कालेन संप्राप्य स्नात्वा धौतांबरः शुचिः ६.१९.
And, after some time, having bathed, wearing clean garments, purified.
अथाऽसौ पृथिवीपालः स्वप्नांते च ददर्श तम् विमानवरमारूढं स्तूयमानं च किंनरैः
Then, at the end of his sleep, the ruler of the earth saw him, mounted on a splendid celestial vehicle, praised by the Kinnaras.
स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु गमिष्यामि सांप्रतं त्रिदिवा लयम्
May blessings be upon you; I shall now depart for the realm of the gods.
ततः स प्रातरुत्थाय हर्षाविष्टो महीपतिः १३ सोऽपि तेनैव रूपेण तस्य संदर्शनं गतः
Then, rising in the morning, filled with joy, the king; he too, in that same form, attained the vision of him.
ततः प्रातस्तृतीयेऽह्नि कृतघ्नस्य महीपतिः
Then, on the third morning, the king, who was ungrateful.
ततः सोऽपि समायातस्तस्य स्वप्ने महीपतेः
Then, he too arrived in the king's dream.
न मे गतिर्महाराज संजाता पापकर्मिणः
O King, I have found no path for one who has committed evil deeds.
तस्मात्संजायते मुक्तिर्यथा मे पार्थिवोत्तम
Therefore, O best of kings, liberation arises for me as you have described.
सत्यमेव परं ब्रह्म सत्यमेव परं तपः
Truth alone is the supreme Brahman; truth alone is the highest austerity.
सत्येन वायु र्वहति सत्येन तपते रविः ६.१९.
By truth the wind blows; by truth the sun shines.
तीर्थसेवा तपो दानं स्वाध्यायो गुरुसेवनम्
Service at sacred fords, austerity, charity, study of the Veda, and service to the teacher—
सर्वे धर्मा धृताः पूर्वमेकत्राऽन्यत्र चाप्यृतम्
All these duties were upheld before, but elsewhere, untruth prevails.
तस्मात्सत्यं पुरस्कृत्य मां तारय महामते
Therefore, holding truth foremost, O wise one, deliver me.
करोमि येन तत्कर्म यद्यपि स्यात्सुदुष्करम् ः
I will perform that act, however difficult it may be.
आस्ते पांसुभिराच्छन्नं कलेर्भीतं गयाशिरः
The head of Gayā, fearful of the age of Kali, lies covered with dust.
अधस्तात्प्लक्षवृक्षस्य दर्भस्थानैः समंततः
Beneath the plakṣa tree, surrounded on all sides by seats of darbha grass—
तत्र गत्वा तिलैस्तैस्त्वं तैः शाकैस्तैः कुशैस्तथा
There, having gone, with those sesame seeds, with those vegetables, and likewise with those kuśa grasses—
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स दीनस्य दयान्वितः
Hearing those words, he, filled with compassion for the afflicted one—
दृष्ट्वा शाकांस्तिलांस्तांस्तु दर्भांस्तेन यथोदितान्
Seeing those vegetables, those sesame seeds, and those darbha grasses as instructed by him—
ततः कृतघ्नमुद्दिश्य श्राद्धं चक्रे यथोदितम् ६.१९.३. विमानवरमारूढो विदूरथमथाऽब्रवीत्
Then, offering the śrāddha for the ungrateful one as prescribed, he ascended a splendid celestial car and spoke to Vidūratha.
मुक्तोऽहं त्वत्प्रसादाच्च प्रेतत्वाद्दारुणाद्विभो
By your grace, O Lord, I am freed from the dreadful state of a ghost.
पितॄणां पुष्टिदा नित्यं गयाशीर्षसमुद्भवा
The head of Gayā, which arose there, always bestows nourishment to the ancestors.
प्रेतपक्षस्य दर्शायां यस्तस्यां श्राद्धमाचरेत्
Whoever performs śrāddha there during the new moon of the dark fortnight for the departed—
कृंतितैश्च तथा दर्भैः सम्यक्छ्रद्धासमन्वितः । स प्राप्नोति फलं कृत्स्नं कृतघ्नप्रेततीर्थतः
With sesame seeds and darbha grass, endowed with proper faith, he obtains the full fruit from the holy place for the ungrateful and the departed.
