वाराहस्य हरेरिष्टं सदा वाससुखप्रदम्
The sacred place of Varāha, beloved of Hari, always bestows the comfort of residence.
वाराहेणावतारेण पृथ्वी तत्र समुद्धृता
There, in the form of Varāha, the earth was lifted up.
अहं चेतो गमिष्यामि वैकुण्ठे च पुनः शुभे
I too shall go, with my mind, to the auspicious Vaikuṇṭha again.
अनेन वपुषा तिष्ठ ह्यस्मिंस्तीर्थे सदा हरे
With this very form, O Hari, remain always at this sacred place.
अहं स्थास्यामि ते वाक्यात्सदा लोक हिते रतः
I shall remain here, as you have said, always devoted to the welfare of the world.
ममाग्रे यो ह्रदः पुण्यः सुनिर्मलजलान्वितः
In front of me is a holy lake, endowed with very pure waters.
तत्र स्नात्वा नरो भक्त्या मुच्यते ब्रह्महत्यया
There, by bathing with devotion, a man is freed from the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa.
पितॄणां जायते तृप्तिर्यावदाभूतसंप्लवम्
The ancestors are satisfied there until the dissolution of creation.
तस्मिन्दिने नृपश्रेष्ठ स्नात्वा व्रतं समाचरेत्
On that day, O best of kings, one should bathe and undertake a vow.
तर्पणं पिंडदानं च यः कुर्याद्भक्तितत्परः 7.3.19.
He who, intent on devotion, performs libations and the offering of balls of food—
तत्र दानं प्रशंसंति गत्वा ब्राह्मणसत्तमे
There, the best of Brāhmaṇas praise the giving of gifts.
रोमसंख्यानि वर्षाणि स्वर्गे तिष्ठति मानवः
A man dwells in heaven for as many years as there are hairs on his body.
एकादश्यां विशेषेण कर्त्तव्यं स्नानमुत्तमम्
On the eleventh day, especially, one should perform an excellent bath.
इति श्रीस्कांदे महापुराण एकाशीतिसाहस्र्यां संहितायां सप्तमे प्रभासखंडे तृतीयेऽर्बुदखंडे वाराहतीर्थमाहात्म्यवर्णनंनामैकोनविंशोध्यायः
Thus ends the nineteenth chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of Varāhatīrtha,' in the third Arbuda section of the seventh Prabhāsa book, in the eighty-one-thousand-verse Skanda Mahāpurāṇa.
प्रभा तत्र पुरा प्राप्ता चंद्रेण सुमहात्मना
There, long ago, Prabhā arrived with the greatly illustrious Moon.
दक्षस्य कन्यका राजन्सप्तविंशतिसंख्यया
O King, Dakṣa's daughters were twenty-seven in number.
तासां मध्ये च रोहिण्या सह रेमे स नित्यदा गत्वा स्वपितरं नत्वा प्राहुरस्राविलेक्षणाः
Among them, he always delighted in Rohini; after going to his father and bowing, those with tearful eyes spoke.
वयं त्यक्ताः प्रजानाथ निर्दोषाः पतिना ततः
We, O lord of progeny, have been abandoned by our husband, though we are blameless.
गतिर्भव सुरश्रेष्ठ सर्वेषां त्वं हितं कुरु
Be the refuge, O best of gods; do what is beneficial for us all.
अब्रवीच्च समं पश्य सर्वासु तनयासु मे
He said, 'See equally all my daughters.'
अथ व्रीडासमायुक्तश्चंद्रस्तं प्रत्यभाषत
Then, the moon, filled with shame, replied to him.
गते दक्षे ततो भूयश्चंद्रमा रोहिणीरतः
When Daksha departed, the moon again engaged with Rohini.
अथ गत्वा पुनः सर्वा दक्षमूचुः सुदुःखिताः
Then, once more, all the daughters, greatly distressed, went to Daksha and spoke.
दौर्भाग्यदुःखसंतप्ता मरिष्याम न संशयः 7.3.20.
Afflicted by misfortune and sorrow, we will die—there is no doubt.
मम वाक्यं त्वया चंद्र यस्मात्पाप कृतं न हि
Because you, O moon, did not heed my words, you have committed a wrong.
क्षयमेष्यसि तस्मात्त्वं यक्ष्मणा नास्ति संशयः
Therefore, you will waste away from consumption; there is no doubt.
यक्ष्मणा व्यापितश्चंद्रः क्षयं याति दिनेदिने
Stricken by consumption, the moon diminishes day by day.
कि कर्त्तव्यं मया तत्र ह्यस्मिञ्छापे सुदारुणे
What should I do in the face of this dreadful curse?
स एवं निश्चयं कृत्वा गतोर्बुदमथाचलम्
Having resolved thus, he went to Mount Arbud.
तस्मै तुष्टो महादेवो वर्षाणामयुते गते
After ten thousand years had passed, Mahadeva was pleased with him.
