तथा पापसमाचारा मनुष्याः शीलवर्जिताः
Likewise, humans there are engaged in sinful conduct, devoid of virtue.
तथा मम नगश्रेष्ठ पक्षौ द्वावपि कर्तितौ
Thus, O best of mountains, both my wings have been cut.
तस्मात्कंचित्सहस्राक्ष उपायं तत्कृते परम्
Therefore, O thousand-eyed one, devise some supreme means for that.
तत्रापि सुशुभा वृक्षा भविष्यंति तवाश्रयाः ॥ ६.९.
Even there, beautiful trees will arise as your refuge.
तथा पुण्यानि तीर्थानि देवतायतनानि च
Likewise, holy pilgrimage sites and abodes of deities will be there.
अत्रस्थस्य प्रभावो यस्तव पर्वत नंदन
Such is the power of yours, O mountain, delight of the gods, while you remain here.
तथा ये मानवास्तत्र पापात्मानोऽपि भूतले
Likewise, even those humans there, sinful in nature, upon the earth,
तस्माद्गच्छ द्रुतं तत्र मया सार्धं नगात्मज
Therefore, go quickly there with me, O son of the mountain.
प्रविष्टः सहसागत्य तस्मिन्नागबिले गतः
Having entered, arriving swiftly, he went into that serpent's cave.
निमग्नो ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठा नासाग्रं यावदेव हि वृक्षगुल्मलताकीर्णै रम्यपक्षिनिषेवितैः
Immersed, O best of Brāhmaṇas, up to the tip of the nose, amidst trees, bushes, and vines, frequented by delightful birds.
एवं संस्थाप्य तं शक्रो हिमाचलसुतं नगम्
Thus, Indra established the mountain, son of Himāchala, in its place.
किं वरेण करिष्यामि त्वत्प्रसादादहं सुखी
What need have I for a boon? By your grace, I am content.
इन्द्र उवाच न वृथा दर्शनं मे स्यादपि स्वप्ने नगात्मज
Indra said: Let my sight not be in vain, even in a dream, O son of the mountain.
तव मूर्धनि विप्रार्थं स पुरं स्थापयिष्यति
Upon your summit, for the sake of the Brahmins, he will establish a city.
तत्र ब्राह्मणशार्दूला वेदवेदांगपारगाः
There, O best of Brahmins, will reside those who have mastered the Vedas and their branches.
तथाहं चैत्रमासस्य चतुर्दश्यां नगात्मज
And I, on the fourteenth day of the month of Caitra, O son of the mountain,
पूजयिष्यामि देवेशं हाटकेश्वरसंज्ञितम्
will worship the Lord of the gods, known as Hāṭakeśvara.
तमेकं दिवसं चात्र शृंगे तव हरः स्वयम्
On that single day, here on your peak, Hara himself
प्रभावस्तेन ते मुख्य स्त्रैलोक्येऽपि भविष्यति
will grant you a radiance that will be foremost, even throughout the three worlds.
रक्तशृंगोऽपि तस्थौ च व्याप्य नागबिलं तदा
The red-horned one stood there, spreading throughout the cave of the mountain.
तस्योपरि सुमुख्यानि तीर्थान्यायतनानि च
Above it are the most auspicious tīrthas and shrines.
आनर्त्ताधिपतिर्भूपश्चमत्कार इति स्मृतः ॥। स ददर्श मृगीं दूरान्निश्चलांगीं तरोरधः
The king of Ānarta, remembered as Camatkāra, saw a doe from afar, motionless beneath a tree.
अथ तां पार्थिवस्तूर्णं शरेणानतपर्वणा
Then the king swiftly struck her with an arrow whose tip was unbarbed.
सहसा सा हता तेन गार्द्ध्रपत्रेण पत्रिणा
Suddenly, she was killed by that arrow, feathered with vulture's wings.
अथ दृष्ट्वा महीपालं नातिदूरे धनुर्धरम्
Then, seeing the king, not far away, armed with a bow,
हताऽहं बालवत्साऽद्य शरेणानतपर्वणा
She said: I have been killed today, though I have a young calf, by an arrow whose tip was unbarbed.
नाऽहं शोचामि भूपाल मरणं स्वशरीरगम्
O king, I do not grieve for my death, which has come to my own body.
यस्मात्त्वयेदृशं कर्म निर्दयं समनुष्ठितम्
But because you have performed such a merciless act.
तस्मात्स्वधर्मसंयुक्तं न मां त्वं शप्तुमर्हसि
Therefore, you should not curse me, for I acted in accordance with my own duty.
क्षत्त्रियाणां वधार्थाय मृगाः सृष्टाः स्वयंभुवा ॥ ६.१०.
Animals were created by the Self-born for the purpose of being slain by kṣatriyas.
