Quickly do what is instructed; it must not be otherwise.
In the field of Hāṭakeśvara, where the god Hara himself resides,
where the serpents emerge and return to the earth’s surface—after bathing in the subterranean Gaṅgā, worship Maheśvara.
Then you will be freed from sin—of this there is no doubt.
He went swiftly to the place where the serpent’s cave was.
Then, entering the netherworld, he was bathed in the waters of the Gaṅgā.
Immediately, his body became free from impurity.
Meanwhile, the gods led by Brahmā and Viṣṇu arrived there.
Having attained purity, O Śakra, you were freed from the sin of slaying a Brāhmaṇa.
O Śakra, fill this serpent’s cave again with earth.
After worshipping this liṅga and bathing in the waters of the Bhāgīrathī,
Then, in heaven, a great festival was celebrated for the slaying of Vṛtra.
O best of Brāhmaṇas, this greatness destroys all sins.
Whoever recites this with devotion, or listens with concentration,
In the sacred region of Hatakeshvara, there is indeed a great serpent's cavern.
Go swiftly and, by my command, fill it with earth and sand.
At that time, the curse of emergence in the form of a linga was pronounced upon me by the enemy of the cities.
Because this linga of mine has been covered by you with earth,
just as you will declare the complete fragrance of camphor,
therefore, O Lord of the gods, be gracious to me, knowing this.
Then the lord of the gods began to ponder how to fill it.
Then the worshipful one among the gods himself spoke to Shatakratu.
Here is the foremost of mountains, renowned by the name Himalaya.
Mainaka is said to be the first, and the second is Nandivardhana.
That Mainaka entered the ocean, O Shakra, out of fear of you.
This Nandivardhana is mentioned as the second.
By the command of Himachala and the noble sage Vasistha,
the third, known here as Raktashringa, still stands today.
O lord of the gods, this cavern cannot be filled in any other way.
Hearing the words of the worshipful deity, the lord of the gods
