He adorned them with garments, crowns, and armlets, had them shave their hair, and gave them black antelope skins to wear.
Equipped with antelope horns and devoted to the milk vow, he then engaged them all in the long sacrifice.
Thus, when the long sacrifice began as prescribed, divine brahmins, accomplished in the Vedas and their branches, arrived.
Likewise, other logicians, householders filled with curiosity, the poor, the blind, the wretched, and others such as actors and dancers also came.
Let it be given, let it be given quickly to these; indeed, let these worlds be enjoyed, let them be enjoyed; let favor be shown.
Thus, this great proclamation is always heard there in the sacrificial enclosure, and never any other at any time.
There are seen mountains made of grain, carefully arranged, and especially of gold, silver, and jewels.
For the sake of gifts to the foremost Brahmins, countless cows are there, as well as well-trained horses and mighty, intoxicated elephants.
All around, there are arrangements resembling mountains, seen during that vast and extensive great sacrifice.
The deities, though invited to receive their share of the sacrifice, do not approach; only through the mouth of fire do they accept that oblation.
Thus, twelve years passed for that king as he performed the sacrifice, yet the desired fruit of his heart was not attained.
Then, after performing the concluding bath marking the completion of the session, the priests satisfied them with appropriate gifts.
Triśaṅku, the best of sages, then dismissed all those assembled, as well as his relatives and friends.
Then, the king, humbled and bowing before him, spoke to Viśvāmitra, the lord of sages.
By your favor, O Brahman, I have obtained the fruit of the long sacrifice, which is difficult for all men to attain and is fully accomplished.
Likewise, my birth, though lost, has been regained, O great sage; by your grace, O best of seers, my state as an outcaste has been destroyed.
Yet one great sorrow remains in my heart, like a thorn: that with this very body I have not attained heaven.
The sons of Vasiṣṭha, O sage, will mock me today, hearing that my effort was in vain and that I did not reach heaven.
Thus, the words of Vasiṣṭha are indeed true, that it was said: 'By sacrifice, one does not reach heaven with the body.'
Therefore, I will now undertake austerity, having taken refuge in the forest; I will no longer accept the kingdom, even if offered by my son.
Sūta said: Hearing these words of Triśaṅku, the foremost of sages, Viśvāmitra, somewhat embarrassed, spoke.
Do not be disheartened, O king, in this matter; with this very body, I shall lead you to heaven.
I will perform whatever actions are needed for heaven, O best of kings; I will do whatever you desire, or else I will perish.
Having spoken thus, he became exceedingly angry at the gods above, and then, in the presence of that king, spoke these fierce words.
Just as I myself forcefully attained the status of a twice-born, so too will I create my own creation—of this there is no doubt.
Then, seeing Śaṅkara, the moon-crested one, the great sage bowed with proper devotion and offered praise.
Viśvāmitra said: Victory to you, O God! Victory, O Inconceivable One! Victory, beloved of Pārvatī! Victory, O Kṛṣṇa, Lord of the universe! Victory, Kṛṣṇa, teacher of the world!
Victory to the Inconceivable, the Immeasurable, the Infinite, the Unchanging! Victory to the Immortal, the Unconquerable, the Imperishable, O Lord of the gods!
Victory to the All-pervading, the Lord of all, the refuge of all the gods! Victory to the one meditated upon by all beings, the destroyer of all sins!
You are the creator and the ordainer; you are the doer and the protector, O Lord of gods, Śaṅkara, of the fourfold host of beings.
