As soon as the king had bathed and beheld Hāṭakeśvara, he was freed from the state of a caṇḍāla and shone with the brilliance of the sun.
Then the sage spoke to him, who had bowed and was freed from sin: 'By good fortune, O king, you are now released from the state of a caṇḍāla.'
'By good fortune you have attained supreme brilliance, by good fortune you have attained supreme austerity; therefore, perform a sacrifice here, properly and with due gifts.'
'By this you will attain the perfection that always abides in your heart; for your sake, I will personally go and petition Brahmā.'
'In your sacrifice, the one who first receives a share from all the gods—bring here all the necessary materials for the sacrifice from Brahmā's world, until I return.'
He replied, 'So be it,' and that sage of firm vows approached Brahmā, bowed to him, and spoke these words.
I will cause King Trishanku to perform a sacrifice, O Grandsire, by which he shall reach your abode in his human body.
Therefore, come there, O Grandsire, to the sacrificial ground, together with all the hosts of gods, led by Shiva and Vishnu.
Receive with your own hand the proper share of the sacrifice, by whose grace he will ascend to heaven with his body, thanks to your favor.
Brahma said: Heaven cannot be attained with one's own body through sacrificial acts; only after leaving the body does one reach Brahman—therefore, do not speak thus to me.
We all, whose mouths are fire, accept the oblation in the sacrifice, strictly according to the injunctions of the Vedas, for the benefit of the sacrificer.
Therefore, the twice-born should again offer the oblation into the mouth of fire; then, by your grace, he will surely attain heaven.
Suta said: Hearing these words of Brahma, Vishvamitra, filled with anger, spoke to the Grandsire: 'Behold the power of my austerity!'
Having caused Trishanku to perform the sacrifice properly and with due gifts, I will lead him to heaven by this sacrifice—witness this, O Grandsire.
Having spoken thus, Vishvamitra quickly went to the earth and made great effort to perform the sacrifice for the noble Trishanku.
He gave the initiation, having summoned brahmins learned in the Vedas, at the proper time for the rite, in that very auspicious forest.
He himself, wise as he was, became the adhvaryu in the sacrifice; Shandilya was the hotar there, and Gautama was the brahman.
Cyavana by name was the agnidhra, Maitravaruna was the karmika; Yajnavalkya was the udgatar, and Jaimini was the pratihartar.
Shankuvarna was the prastotar, and Galava was the unnetar; Pulastya was the brahmanachhamsi, and Garga, the lord of sages, was the hotar.
Atri was the neshta, and Bhrigu himself was the acchavaka; Trishanku, filled with faith, appointed all of them as officiating priests.
He adorned them with garments, crowns, and armlets, had them shave their hair, and gave them black antelope skins to wear.
Equipped with antelope horns and devoted to the milk vow, he then engaged them all in the long sacrifice.
Thus, when the long sacrifice began as prescribed, divine brahmins, accomplished in the Vedas and their branches, arrived.
Likewise, other logicians, householders filled with curiosity, the poor, the blind, the wretched, and others such as actors and dancers also came.
Let it be given, let it be given quickly to these; indeed, let these worlds be enjoyed, let them be enjoyed; let favor be shown.
Thus, this great proclamation is always heard there in the sacrificial enclosure, and never any other at any time.
There are seen mountains made of grain, carefully arranged, and especially of gold, silver, and jewels.
For the sake of gifts to the foremost Brahmins, countless cows are there, as well as well-trained horses and mighty, intoxicated elephants.
All around, there are arrangements resembling mountains, seen during that vast and extensive great sacrifice.
The deities, though invited to receive their share of the sacrifice, do not approach; only through the mouth of fire do they accept that oblation.
