पतिव्रतत्वेन तुष्टाः सत्येन च विशेषतः
Pleased by her fidelity to her husband, and especially by her truthfulness,
यदत्रास्ति महालिंगं मन्नाम्ना तद्भविष्यति
Whatever great liṅga is here, it shall bear my name.
एतदेव ममाभीष्टं नान्यदस्ति प्रयोजनम्
This alone is my desire; I have no other purpose.
तव नामान्वितं जातं तीर्थं वै मणिकर्णिका
The sacred place named Maṇikarṇikā has arisen bearing your name.
वालखिल्यास्तपोनिष्ठा विशेषात्तत्र संस्थिताः
The Vālakhilyas, devoted to austerity, are especially established there.
तत्र सूर्यग्रहे प्राप्ते स्नानदानादिकाः क्रियाः 7.3.16.
There, when a solar eclipse occurs, rites such as bathing and giving are performed.
यं यं काममभिध्याय स्नानं तत्र करोति यः
Whoever bathes there, contemplating whatever desire, attains it.
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन स्नानं तत्र समाचरेत्
Therefore, one should strive with all effort to bathe there.
यत्र पूर्वं तपस्तप्तं पंगुना ब्राह्मणेन च
Where previously austerity was practiced by the lame one and by a brāhmaṇa.
पंगुनामा द्विजः पूर्वं च्यवनस्यान्वयेऽभवत्
A brāhmaṇa named Paṃgu, descended from Cyavana, lived there in former times.
गृहकृत्यनियुक्तोऽसावेकदा बान्धवैर्नृप
He was engaged in household duties, O king, once together with his relatives.
अथासौ तैः परित्यक्तो गत्वार्बुदमथाचलम्
Then, abandoned by them, he went to Mount Arbuda.
लिंगं संस्थाप्य तत्रैव पूजयामास तं विभुम्
There he established a liṅga and worshipped the Lord.
शिवभक्तिपरो जातो वायुभक्षो बभूव ह
He became devoted to Śiva and lived subsisting on air.
ततस्तुष्टो महादेवो ब्राह्मणं नृपसत्तम
Then, O best of kings, Mahādeva was pleased with the brāhmaṇa.
तव दास्याम्यहं सर्वं यद्यपि स्यात्सुदुर्लभम्
I will grant you everything, even if it is very difficult to obtain.
पंगुभावोऽत्र मे यातु प्रसादात्तव शंकर
Let my lameness depart here by your grace, O Śaṃkara.
तवास्तु सततं चात्र सांनिध्यं सह भार्यया 7.3.17.
May your constant presence be here, together with your wife.
ख्यातिं तपःप्रभावेन तीर्थं यास्यति सत्तम
Through the power of austerity, O noble one, the sacred place will attain fame.
चैत्रशुक्लचतुर्द्दश्यां सांनिध्यं मे भवेत्तथा
On the fourteenth day of the bright half of Caitra, let my presence be here as well.
पुलस्त्य उवाच स्नानमात्रेण विप्रोऽसौ दिव्यरूपमवाप ह
Pulastya said: By merely bathing, that brāhmaṇa obtained a divine form.
तस्मिन्दिने नृपश्रेष्ठ स्नानं तत्र समाचरेत्
On that day, O best of kings, one should perform bathing there.
इति श्रीस्कान्दे महापुराण एकाशीति साहस्र्यां संहितायां सप्तमे प्रभासखण्डे तृतीयेऽर्बुदखण्डे पंगुतीर्थमाहात्म्यवर्णनंनाम सप्तदशोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the seventeenth chapter named 'The Greatness of Paṅgu Tīrtha,' in the third section, Arbuda Khaṇḍa, of the seventh Prabhāsa Khaṇḍa, in the eighty-one-thousand-verse Skanda Mahāpurāṇa.
पुलस्त्य उवाच ततो गच्छेन्नृपश्रेष्ठ यमतीर्थमनुत्तमम्
Pulastya said: Thereafter, O best of kings, one should proceed to the unsurpassed Yama Tīrtha.
पुरा चित्रांगदो नाम राजा परमलोभवान्
Long ago, there was a king named Citrāṅgada, exceedingly greedy.
अतीव निष्ठुरो दुष्टो देवब्राह्मणपीडकः
He was extremely cruel and wicked, a tormentor of gods and brāhmaṇas.
सत्यशौचविहीनस्तु मायामत्सरसंयुतः
Devoid of truth and purity, he was filled with deceit and jealousy.
अटनात्स परिश्रांतः क्षुत्पिपासासमाकुलः
From wandering, he became exhausted, overwhelmed by hunger and thirst.
पद्मिनीभिः समाकीर्णो ग्राहनक्रझषाकुलः
It was filled with lotuses, and teeming with crocodiles, alligators, and fish.
तृषार्तः संप्रविष्टः स तस्मिन्नेव जलाशये
Tormented by thirst, he entered that very reservoir of water.
