तथा ख्यातिमसौ गंता यथा देवेन भाषितम्
Thus its fame will spread as spoken by the god.
अग्रवेदीसमाचारस्त्यक्ततीर्थप्रतिग्रहः ।। 4.2.98.
The proper conduct at the foremost altar is to renounce accepting gifts from sacred places.
अदांभिकोऽक्रूरमनाः सदैवातिथिवल्लभः
He is without deceit, with a gentle mind, always dear to guests.
विषमेषु शरैस्तीव्रैः कारितस्त्वपदे पदम्
In difficult circumstances, struck by sharp arrows, you made your step at the foot.
तया च प्रेरितोऽपेयं पपौ चापि विमोहितः
Prompted by her, he drank what was not to be drunk and was bewildered.
वैष्णवान्धनिनो दृष्ट्वा क्षणं वैष्णववेषभृत्
Seeing those bound to Viṣṇu, even for a moment, wearing the attire of a Vaiṣṇava—
शिवभक्तान्समालोक्य किंचिच्च परिदित्सुकान्
Beholding devotees of Śiva, and some who wished to give a little—
शिखी चोपग्रहकरः सर्वेभ्योऽसत्प्रतिग्रही
The tufted one, with the gesture of acceptance, took improper gifts from all.
एवं तस्य प्रवृत्तस्य कश्चित्पर्वतदेशतः
Thus, as he acted, someone from a mountain region—
स्नात्वा स चक्रसरसि कथयिष्यति चेति वै
Having bathed in the lake of the wheel, he will narrate, thus it is said.
अस्ति कश्चित्प्रतिग्राही यस्मै दद्यामहं धनम् 4.2.98.
There is someone who accepts gifts, to whom I should give wealth.
उद्दिष्ट उपविष्टोसौ यो जपेद्ध्यानमुद्रया
The one who is designated and seated, who recites with the gesture of meditation—
इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा स गत्वा तत्समीपतः
Hearing their words, he went and approached them.
मामुद्धर महाविप्र तीर्थं मे सफलीकुरु
"Lift me up, great Brahmin; make my pilgrimage fruitful for me."
अथाक्षमालिकां कर्णे कृत्वा ध्यानं विसृज्य च
Then, placing his rosary at his ear and abandoning meditation,
तस्य संज्ञां स वै बुद्ध्वा प्रोवाचाति प्रहृष्टवत्
He, understanding his intention, spoke with great delight.
इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा त्यक्त्वा मौनमुवाच ह
Hearing those words, he broke his silence and spoke.
परं तेऽनुग्रहार्थं तु करिष्यामि प्रतिग्रहम्
"For your supreme benefit, I will accept the offering."
यावदस्त्यखिलं वित्तं तन्मध्ये न्यस्य कस्यचित्
"As much as all the wealth there is, placing it among others—"
तावत्तुभ्यं प्रदास्यामि विश्वेशस्त्वं यतो मम
"That much I will give to you, for you are my Lord of All."
ये वसंतीह विश्वेश राजधान्यां द्विजोत्तम 4.2.98.
"O Lord of All, all those who dwell here in the royal city, O best of twice-born—"
परोद्धरणशीला ये ये परेच्छाप्रपूरकाः
"Those who are devoted to rescuing others, those who fulfill the wishes of others—"
इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रहृष्टेंद्रियमानसः
Hearing those words, his senses and mind became delighted.
विश्वेशः प्रीयतां चेति प्रोच्य यातो यथागतः
Saying, "May the Lord of All be pleased," he departed as he had come.
बहिर्निर्गतमात्रस्तु बहुभिः परिभूयते
But as soon as he went outside, he was insulted by many.
असावेव हि चांडालः सर्वलोकबहिष्कृतः
Indeed, he was a Chandala, cast out by all people.
स च तद्भयतो गेहात्काकभीतदिवांधवत्
Out of fear, he fled from the house like a blind man frightened by crows.
स एकदा संप्रधार्य गृहिण्या लोकदूषितः
Once, reflecting, he was shunned by his wife and by people.
मध्ये मार्गं स गच्छन्वै लक्षितस्तु सकांचनः
While walking along the road, he was noticed in the midst, carrying a golden ornament.
नीत्वा ते तमरण्यानीं तस्कराः सपरिच्छदम् 4.2.98.
Then, robbers with their followers led him into the forest.
