एतत्कथय मे प्राज्ञ सर्वज्ञानंदवर्धन
O wise one, tell me this, which increases all knowledge and joy.
देवे न मनसि ध्यातमिति कुंभजने मुने
O sage, this was not contemplated in the mind of the god, nor in the vessel.
एको मनोरथश्चायं द्वितीयोयं सुनिश्चितम्
This is one desire, and this is certainly a second one.
क्षणंक्षणं समालोक्यमंगस्पर्शे क्षणंक्षणम् ।। एकशय्यासनाहारं लप्स्यतेऽनेन क्षणेक्षणे !
Moment by moment, seeing and touching the limbs, in each instant, one will obtain the sharing of bed, seat, and food.
योयं न गोचरः क्वापि वाणीमनसयोरपि 4.2.93.
This which is not perceived anywhere, not even by speech or mind—
योऽमुं सकृत्स्पृशेज्जंतुर्योमुं पश्येत्सकृन्मुदा । न स भूयोभिजायेत भवेच्चानंदमेदुरः
Whoever touches that one even once, or joyfully sees that one even once, will not be born again and will become filled with bliss.
गृहक्रीडनकं मे सौ यदि भूयात्कथंचन
If by any means this becomes my household plaything—
विधेः समीहितं चेति नूनं ज्ञात्वा स सर्ववित्
Knowing certainly the intention of fate, he, the all-knower—
श्रुत्वैत्यगस्तिः स्कंदस्य भाषितं पर्यमूमुदत्
Hearing thus, Agastya was greatly delighted by Skanda’s words.
विधेरपि मनोज्ञातं शंभोरपि मनोगतम् । । सम्यक्चित्तं त्वया ज्ञातं नमस्तुभ्यं चिदात्मने
The intention of fate has been known, and even the thought of Śambhu; your mind has truly understood—salutations to you, embodiment of consciousness.
स्कंदोपि नितरां तुष्टःश्रोतुरानंददर्शनात्
Skanda too was exceedingly pleased at seeing the listener’s joy.
न मे श्रमो वृथा जातो ब्रुवतस्ते पुरः कथाम्
My effort has not been in vain, speaking the tale before you.
देवे रुद्रत्वमापन्ने देवी दक्षसुताभवत्
When the god attained the state of Rudra, the goddess became the daughter of Dakṣa.
इदं सतीश्वरं लिंगं तव नाम्ना भविष्यति . 4.2.93.
This liṅga of Satīśvara will bear your name.
तथैतल्लिंगमाराध्यान्यस्यापि हि फलिष्यति
Indeed, by worshipping this liṅga, another too will obtain the fruit.
एतल्लिंगं समाराध्य कुमारोपि वरांगनाम्
By worshipping this liṅga, even Kumāra will obtain the excellent woman.
भविष्यति न संदेहः सतीश्वरसमर्चगात्
There is no doubt that, by worshipping Satīśvara, it will come to be.
तस्य तस्य स स क्षिप्रं भविष्यति मनोरथः
For each and every one, that very desire will quickly come to pass.
इतोष्टमे च दिवसे त्वज्जनेता प्रजापतिः इत्युक्त्वा देवदेवेशस्तत्रैवांतर्हितोभवत्
On the eighth day from now, your father, Prajapati, will grant you. Having spoken thus, the lord of gods vanished from that place.
सापि स्वभवनं याता सती दाक्षायणी मुदा । । पितापि तस्मै प्रादात्तां रुद्राय दिवसेष्टमे
Then Sati, daughter of Daksha, joyfully returned to her own home; and her father gave her to Rudra on the eighth day.
स्मरणादपि लिंगं च दद्यात्सत्त्वगुणं परम्
Even by remembering the linga, one attains the highest quality of sattva.
रत्नेशात्पूर्वतो भागे दृष्ट्वा लिंगं सतीश्वरम् । । मुच्यते पातकैः सद्यः क्रमाज्ज्ञानं च विंदति
Seeing the lordly linga to the east of the jewel-lord, one is instantly freed from sins and gradually attains knowledge.
स्कंद उवाच । । अमृतेशमुखादीनि यन्नामाप्यमृतप्रदम्
Skanda said: The names beginning with Amritesha bestow immortality even by utterance.
पुरा सनारु नामासीन्मुनिरत्र गृहाश्रमी
Once, there was a sage named Sanaru, living as a householder in that place.
लिंगपूजारतो नित्यं नित्यं तीर्थाप्रतिग्रही
He was always devoted to worshipping the linga and regularly received holy waters.
स कदाचिद्गतोरण्यं तत्र दष्टः पृदाकुना
Once, while wandering in the forest, he was bitten there by a venomous snake.
सनारुणा समुच्छ्वस्य नीतः स उपजंघनिः
Sanaru, gasping for breath, was carried away, his lower limbs paralyzed.
तत्रासीच्छ्रीफलाकारं लिंगमेकं सुगुप्तवत्
There, a single linga, shaped like a coconut, was concealed.
सर्पदष्टस्य संस्कारः कथं भवति चेति वै
How should the funeral rites be performed for one bitten by a snake?
अथ तं वीक्ष्य स मुनिः सनारुरुपजंघनिम्
Then the sage Sanaru, seeing the paralyzed one, gazed upon him.
