वारितो गणराजः स मा कार्षीः साहसं त्विति
The king of the Gaṇas restrained him, saying, 'Do not commit this rash act.'
प्राप्य दक्षं विनद्योच्चैर्धिक्त्वामीश्वरनिंदकम् स कथं सेश्वरं कर्म न कुर्याद्दक्षतांदधत्
Approaching Dakṣa, he cried out loudly, 'Shame on you, blasphemer of the Lord! How can one who possesses skill perform an act with the Lord?'
येनास्येन पवित्रेण भवता निंदितः शिवः
By whose pure mouth you have reviled Śiva.
इत्युक्त्वा तस्य दक्षस्य हरपारुष्यभाषिणः ।। 4.2.89.
Having spoken thus to Dakṣa, who uttered harsh words against Hara,
ततस्त्वदितिमुख्यानां मिलितानां महोत्सवे
Then, at the great festival of the assembled chief mothers,
वेणीदंडाश्च कासांचित्तेनच्छिन्ना महारुषा
He, in great wrath, cut off the braids and staffs of some.
नासापुटांस्तथान्यासां पाटयामास पार्षदः
The attendant tore open the nostrils of others as well.
ये ये निनिंदुर्देवेशं ये ये च शुश्रुवुस्तदा
All those who insulted the lord of the gods, and all those who heard at that time,
केचिदुल्लंबिता यूपे पाशयित्वा दृढं गले
Some were hung upon the sacrificial post, their necks tightly bound with cords.
द्विजराजश्च धर्मश्च भृगुमारीचिमुख्यकाः
And the king of the twice-born, Dharma, and the foremost among Bhṛgu and Mārīci.
एते जामातरस्तस्य यतो दक्षस्य दुर्धियः
These are his sons-in-law, for they are the misguided ones of Daksha.
तानि कुंडानि ते यूपास्ते स्तंभाः स च मंडपः
Those are the sacrificial pits, those are the posts, those are the pillars, and that is the pavilion.
ते च वै यज्ञसंभारास्ते ते यज्ञप्रवर्तकाः
Those indeed are the sacrificial implements, and those are the initiators of the sacrifice.
स्तोकेनैव हि कालेन यथर्धिः परवंचनात् 4.2.89.
In just a short time, due to deception by another, prosperity is lost.
विधीरितमिति श्रुत्वा स्मित्वा देवो महेश्वरः 4.2.89.
Hearing that it had been ordained, the god Maheśvara smiled.
काश्यां लिंगप्रतिष्ठायैः कृताऽत्र सुकृतात्मभिः 4.2.89.
In Kāśī, for the establishment of the liṅga, it was performed here by those of virtuous soul.
स्तुत्वा नानाविधैः स्तोत्रैः प्रसन्नं वीक्ष्य शंकरम् 4.2.89.
Having praised Śaṅkara with various kinds of hymns, seeing him pleased—
श्रुत्वाख्यानमिदं पुण्यं दक्षेश्वरसमुद्भवम्
Having heard this auspicious account, the origin of Dakṣeśvara—
अगस्त्य उवाच पार्वतीहृदयानंद पार्वतीश समुद्भवम्
Agastya said: O delight of Pārvatī's heart, O origin of Pārvatī's lord—
शृण्वगस्ते यदा मेना हिमाचलपतिव्रता
Listen, Agastya: when Menā, the devoted wife of Himāchala, heard—
किं स्थानं वसतिर्वा का को बंधुर्वेत्सि किंचन
What place, what dwelling, who is a relative—do you know anything?
निशम्येति वचो मातुरतिह्रीणा गिरींद्रजा
Hearing these words of her mother, the daughter of the mountain, without any shyness—
मया श्वश्रूगृहं कांत गम्यमद्य विनिश्चितम्
My beloved, today it is decided that I must go to my mother-in-law's house.
गिरींद्रजागिरं श्रुत्वा गिरीश इति तत्त्ववित्
Hearing the words of the mountain's daughter, the knower of truth, Lord of the Mountain—
प्राप्यानंदवनं देवी परमानंदकारणम्
The goddess reached the Forest of Joy, the cause of supreme delight.
अथ विज्ञापयांचक्रे गौरी गिरिशमेकदा
Then, once, Gaurī made her request known to Giriśa.
इति गौरीरितं श्रुत्वा प्रत्युवाच पिनाकधृक्
Having heard these words spoken by Gaurī, the bearer of Pināka replied—
तिलांतरं न देव्यस्ति विना लिंगं हि कुत्रचित् 4.2.90.
O goddess, there is no difference of sesame without the liṅga anywhere.
अन्यत्रापि हि सा देवि भवेदानंदकारणम्
Elsewhere too, that goddess can be the cause of bliss.
परमानंदरूपाणि संति लिंगान्यनेकशः
There are many forms that are embodiments of supreme bliss.
