तुष्टेन शंभुना दत्तं तुभ्यं चक्रं सुदर्शनम्

The Sudarśana discus was given to you by the pleased Śambhu.

SkP 11.89.68

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य वीरभद्रस्य चोर्जितम्

Hearing these powerful words of Vīrabhadra,

SkP 11.89.69

त्वं शंभोः सुत देशीयो गणानां प्रवरोस्यहो

You are, O son of Śambhu, truly the chief among the Gaṇas.

SkP 11.89.70

योसि सोस्यहमप्यत्र दक्षरक्षणदक्षधीः 4.2.89.

As you are, so am I here—skilled in protecting Dakṣa.

SkP 11.89.71

इत्युक्तो वीरभद्रः स तेन वै शार्ङ्गधन्वना

Thus addressed by him, Vīrabhadra spoke to the wielder of Śārṅga.

अथ तैः प्रमथैर्विष्णोरनुगा गदिता रणे

Then, in battle, those Pramathas of Viṣṇu were struck down.

ततस्तार्क्ष्यरथः क्रुद्धस्त्वेकैकं रणमूर्धनि

Then the charioteer of Garuḍa, enraged, confronted each one at the forefront of battle.

ते भिन्नवक्षसः सर्वे गणा रुधिरवर्षिणः

All those Gaṇas, their chests split open, rained blood.

SkP 11.89.75

क्षरंत इव मातंगाः स्रवंत इव पर्वताः

As if elephants were oozing, as if mountains were streaming.

ततः प्रहस्य गणपोऽब्रवीद्वै कुंठनायकम्

Then, laughing, the lord of the Gaṇas spoke to Kuṃṭhanāyaka:

परं युध्यसि दैत्येंद्रैर्दानवेंद्रैर्न पार्षदैः

You fight valiantly with the lords of Daityas and Dānavas, not with the attendants.

गदिनाऽथ गदा तूर्णं दैत्येंद्रगिरिरेणुकृत्

Then, with a mace, the mace-bearer swiftly shattered the mountain-like lord of the Daityas.

तदंगसंगमासाद्य विदद्रे शतधा तया

Then, upon coming into contact with her body, he was shattered into a hundred pieces by her.

जघान वासुदेवोपि तरसाऽज्ञातवेदनम् 4.2.89.

Vāsudeva too struck fiercely, unaware of the true nature.

SkP 11.89.81

आताड्य सव्यदोर्दंडे गदां भूमावपातयत्

After being struck on the left arm, he cast his mace down upon the ground.

स च चक्रं समागच्छद्दृष्ट्वा सस्मार शंकरम् कंठमासाद्यवीरस्य सम्यग्जातं सुदर्शनम्

He saw the discus approaching, and remembering Śaṃkara, the Sudarśana was properly formed at the hero’s neck.

तेन चक्रेण शुशुभे नितरां स गणेश्वरः

With that discus, the lord of the Gaṇas shone exceedingly.

ततः सुदर्शनं दृष्ट्वा तत्कंठाभरणं हरिः

Then Hari, seeing the Sudarśana adorning his neck,

सनंदकं करं तस्य प्रोद्यतं मधुविद्विषः

saw the hand of Madhu’s enemy raised with the Sanandaka.

अभ्यधावच्च वेगेन गृहीत्वा शूलमुज्ज्वलम्

He rushed forward with speed, seizing the radiant spear.

वारितो गणराजः स मा कार्षीः साहसं त्विति

The king of the Gaṇas restrained him, saying, 'Do not commit this rash act.'

SkP 11.89.88

प्राप्य दक्षं विनद्योच्चैर्धिक्त्वामीश्वरनिंदकम् स कथं सेश्वरं कर्म न कुर्याद्दक्षतांदधत्

Approaching Dakṣa, he cried out loudly, 'Shame on you, blasphemer of the Lord! How can one who possesses skill perform an act with the Lord?'

येनास्येन पवित्रेण भवता निंदितः शिवः

By whose pure mouth you have reviled Śiva.

SkP 11.89.90

इत्युक्त्वा तस्य दक्षस्य हरपारुष्यभाषिणः ।। 4.2.89.

Having spoken thus to Dakṣa, who uttered harsh words against Hara,

ततस्त्वदितिमुख्यानां मिलितानां महोत्सवे

Then, at the great festival of the assembled chief mothers,

वेणीदंडाश्च कासांचित्तेनच्छिन्ना महारुषा

He, in great wrath, cut off the braids and staffs of some.

नासापुटांस्तथान्यासां पाटयामास पार्षदः

The attendant tore open the nostrils of others as well.

ये ये निनिंदुर्देवेशं ये ये च शुश्रुवुस्तदा

All those who insulted the lord of the gods, and all those who heard at that time,

SkP 11.89.95

केचिदुल्लंबिता यूपे पाशयित्वा दृढं गले

Some were hung upon the sacrificial post, their necks tightly bound with cords.

SkP 11.89.96

द्विजराजश्च धर्मश्च भृगुमारीचिमुख्यकाः

And the king of the twice-born, Dharma, and the foremost among Bhṛgu and Mārīci.
