शृंगाग्राणि गिरीणां च कैश्चिदुत्पाटितानि वै
Some tore up the peaks of mountains.
उत्पाट्य महतो वृक्षान्केचित्प्राप्ता मखांगणम्
Having uprooted great trees, some reached the sacrificial ground.
मंडपं ध्वंसयामासुः केचित्क्रोधोद्धुरागणाः अभक्षयन्हवींष्यन्ये पृषदाज्यं पपुः परे
Some, driven by rage, began to destroy the pavilion; others devoured the oblations, and some drank the clarified butter.
दध्वंसुरन्नराशींश्च केचित्पर्वतसन्निभान्
Some burned heaps of men, massive as mountains.
केचित्पक्वान्नपुष्टांगा यज्ञपात्राण्यचूर्णयन् 4.2.89.४० व्यभजञ्छकटान्केचित्पशून्केचिदजीगिलन्
Some, their bodies nourished by cooked food, crushed the sacrificial vessels; others broke the carts, and some swallowed the animals.
स्वयं परिदधुश्चान्ये दुकूलानि मुदा युताः
Others, filled with joy, themselves donned the fine garments.
एकेन च भगो देवः पश्यंश्चक्रे विलोचनः
And with a single portion, the god fashioned an eye while looking on.
यज्ञः पलायितो दृष्टः केनचिन्मृगरूपधृक्
The sacrifice was seen fleeing, having taken the form of a deer, by someone.
एकः सरस्वतीं यांतीं दृष्ट्वा निर्नासिकां व्यधात्
One, seeing Sarasvatī departing, made her without a nose.
अर्यम्णो बाहुयुगलं तथोत्पाटितवान्परः
Another tore out the pair of arms of Aryaman.
चिच्छेद वायोर्वृषणं पार्षदोन्यः प्रतापवान्
A mighty one cut off the testicles of Vāyu and the flank of another.
यत्र धर्मे महेशो न प्रथमं परिपूज्यते
Where, in righteousness, Maheśa is not first to be worshipped—
अनीश्वरं हविर्भुक्तं त्वयेत्या ताडयत्पदा
—the offering consumed is said to be without a lord, and so he struck it with his foot.
वामयामास बहुशो भक्षिता ह्यध्वराहुतीः 4.2.89.
He vomited repeatedly, for the oblations of the sacrifice had indeed been eaten.
रुद्राख्या धारणवशात्प्रमथैस्तेऽवहेलिताः
Those called Rudras, due to the power of their bearing, were disregarded by the Pramathas.
बहिरुद्गिरयामास यद्दत्तं चेशवर्ज्जितम्
He expelled outward whatever had been given, except that which belonged to the Lord.
उड्डीय गिरिमाश्रित्यच्छन्नः कौतुकमैक्षत
Flying up, he took refuge on a mountain, and, concealed, watched the spectacle.
प्रमथाः कालयामासुरन्यानपि च याचकान् वीरभद्रः स्वतः प्राप्तः प्रमथानीकिनी वृतः
The Pramathas drove away the other petitioners as well; Vīrabhadra himself arrived, surrounded by the Pramatha hosts.
यज्ञवाटं श्मशानाभं दृष्ट्वा तैः प्रमथैः पुरा
Long ago, those Pramathas, seeing the sacrificial enclosure resembling a cremation ground—
गणाः पश्यत दुर्वृत्तैः प्रारब्धानां च कर्मणाम्
—the hosts, seeing the wicked ones and the acts they had begun—
ये द्विषंति महादेवं सर्वकर्मैकसाक्षिणम्
—those who hate Mahādeva, the sole witness of all actions—
क्व स दक्षो दुराचारः क्व च यज्ञभुजः सुराः
Where is that evil-doer Dakṣa, and where are the gods who partake of the sacrifice?
इत्याज्ञा वीरभद्रस्य प्राप्य ते प्रमथा द्रुतम्
Having received this command of Vīrabhadra, the Pramathas quickly—
तेन ते प्रमथाः सर्वे महाबलपराक्रमाः 4.2.89.
By him, all those Pramathas, possessing great strength and valor—
अथ नष्टेषु सर्वेषु प्रमथेषु हरेर्भयात्
Then, when all the Pramathas had been destroyed out of fear of Hari,
ददर्श शार्ङ्गिणं चाग्रे स्वगणैश्च परिष्टुतम्
He saw before him the wielder of Śārṅga, praised by his own attendants.
चक्रिभिर्गदिभिर्जुष्टं खड्गिभिश्चापि शार्ङ्गिभिः
Surrounded by those bearing discs and maces, and also by those with swords and bows.
त्वं तु यज्ञपुमानत्र महायज्ञप्रवर्तकः
You, indeed, are the personification of sacrifice here, the initiator of the great sacrifice.
किं वा दक्षं समानीय देहि युध्यस्व वा मया
Either bring Dakṣa here, or else fight with me.
प्रायशः शंभुभक्तेषु यतस्त्वं प्रोच्यसेऽग्रणीः
For among the devotees of Śambhu, you are generally regarded as the foremost.
