Then he addressed that Brahmin, whose limbs were trembling.
Ah, I have received initiation; nothing remains for me to do.
By whom were you summoned, and why have you come here, O great dullard?
Wherever this glorious Hari is, all auspiciousness is most auspicious.
Where Vajradhara Shakra, initiated in a hundred sacrifices, is present.
You wish to compare that great sacrifice with a cremation ground.
Where there is prosperity, where the giver of prosperity is manifest, where the swift purifier is present.
Where the divine teacher himself has come to be the officiant of the sacrifice.
Where these sages, led by Vasiṣṭha, take up the role of priests.
Hearing this, the sage Dadhichi, foremost among the wise, spoke.
Yet, the Śāmbhavi power is spoken of in the Veda, and Viṣṇu is proclaimed.
He who is initiated in a hundred horse sacrifices, wielding the thunderbolt.
Having again worshipped the lord of beings, he attained the single Amaravati.
His strength was known to all, long ago, when he bound Śveta with a noose.
At that time, Rudra, who is to be grasped by the heel, became the spiritual teacher of the gods.
Those like Vasiṣṭha, who partake in priestly duties, recognize him.
Even other sages, out of respect for you, participated in your sacrifice.
Therefore, you should invoke the Lord of all, the master of sacrificial rewards.
When that great god is present, the sole witness of all creation,
Just as inert seeds do not bear fruit by themselves,
So too, speech without meaning, or a body without righteousness, is fruitless.
Just as lands without the Ganges, or homes without sons,
Just as a kingdom without a minister, or twice-born without the Vedas,
Just as twilight rites without darbha grass, or offerings without sesame,
Thus, Dadhīci spoke, but he did not accept those words.
And, greatly angered, he said: 'What concern of yours is my sacrifice?'
Those acts certainly succeed here when performed properly.
And indeed, for the accomplishment of one's own acts, the Lord is present in all.
So let it be; the supreme witness should never grant fruit anywhere.
All actions are inert and bear no fruit without the Lord.
